Special Issue on Sexuality Education and the Social Determinants of Health

Why do some people live longer, suffer fewer health issues, and attain more of their life goals? Is it because of who they are, what they do, or where they live? It is all of these things and more because how and where we live, learn, and play matters. These critical factors, or the social determinants of health, shape our health and well-being.

Recognizing the influence of the social determinants of health is the first step in recognizing that adolescent sexual and reproductive health is a social justice issue, with public health impacts. These impacts are both prompted and confounded by the social determinants of health and require a holistic approach to achieve equity. Each of us is affected by factors at an individual level, but also through our relationships and communities, and in society as a whole—a reality commonly explained by the social-ecological model.

But what does all this really mean? The theory makes sense, but how can sex educators apply it? The American Journal of Sexuality Education is compiling a special issue focused on the social determinants of health as they relate to adolescent sexual and reproductive health and behavior to answer this need for practical solutions and research.

This issue will provide current research as it relates to the social determinants of health and sexuality education programming, best practices, sample lesson plans, reports on curriculum development and assessment, literature reviews, scholarly commentary, educational program reports, and media reviews (books, videos, internet resources, and curricula).
