At Healthy Teen Network, Rebecca serves as Project Coordinator for the In/Tend Innovation Hub, working closely with the Project Manager and Project Director to support day-to-day project management, operations, and logistics. In this role, she helps keep complex projects moving smoothly, bringing care, organization, and a youth-centered lens to every detail.

Before joining Healthy Teen Network, Rebecca worked as a Senior Research Program Coordinator at the Johns Hopkins Center for Adolescent Health. There, she contributed to multiple mixed-methods research studies focused on the health and well-being of young people in Baltimore. She also has extensive experience collaborating with youth advisory boards and community partners to facilitate participatory research methods that center young people’s lived experiences.

Rebecca holds a Master of Science in Public Health from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, with concentrations in Adolescent Health and Sexual and Reproductive Health. She also earned certificates in LGBTQ+ Health and Maternal & Child Health and holds a Bachelor of Science in Community Health Education from Western Oregon University.

Rebecca’s commitment to inclusive, affirming sex education is shaped by what she felt was missing from her own experience. She shared, “The sex ed I was taught had no mention of consent and healthy relationships—it completely lacked in teaching young people communication and interpersonal skills.” This gap continues to motivate her work to ensure young people feel respected, informed, and empowered.

Ever since high school, I have had an unwavering passion for adolescent sexual and reproductive health.

Rebecca’s journey to Healthy Teen Network has been years in the making. “Ever since high school, I have had an unwavering passion for adolescent sexual and reproductive health,” she said. After attending the Healthy Teen Network conference a few years ago, she remembers thinking, “I want to do this. How can I get involved in this work?”

Rebecca shared that Healthy Teen Network’s goals, values, and vision align closely with her own: “Supporting and empowering young people to lead healthy and fulfilling lives.” Joining the team, she says, is “a dream come true.”

I really look forward to working closely with our Innovation Development Teams (IDTs) as a part of the Healthy Teen Network Innovation Incubator Hub.

As she begins her role, Rebecca is especially excited to learn and grow in the innovation space. “I really look forward to working closely with our Innovation Development Teams (IDTs) as a part of the Healthy Teen Network Innovation Incubator Hub,” she shared. “I don’t have experience in the innovation space, so I am excited to learn more about it and support the IDTs!”

If Rebecca had a magic wand to improve adolescent sexual and reproductive health outcomes, she’d focus on access and empowerment. “I would make sure that all young people have access to inclusive, affirming, comprehensive sex ed,” she said, with a particular emphasis on helping young people “feel empowered in decision making and feel respected.”

Outside of work, Rebecca’s love of problem-solving continues—just in more playful ways. A self-described puzzle fanatic and devoted animal lover, she enjoys “taking something complicated and working through it piece by piece until it makes sense.” When she’s not making a spreadsheet look pretty, you can find Rebecca reading or playing video games while cuddling with her pets—and, as she admits, “probably eating ice cream.”

We’re so excited to welcome Rebecca to the Healthy Teen Network team and look forward to the care, curiosity, and thoughtfulness she brings to our innovation and research work. Welcome, Rebecca!

In her role as Senior Manager, Innovation and Research, Christy manages In/Tend, Healthy Teen Network’s Innovation Incubator Hub. In/Tend prioritizes participatory research and human-centered design to spark imagination and generate innovative approaches to adolescent sexual and reproductive health. Drawing on her deep experience in community engagement, research, and adolescent well-being, Christy supports innovation development teams throughout their journeys—helping them dream big, stay grounded in evidence, and center youth voices at every step.

I love nerding out on connecting imagination to innovation, creativity, and joy!

“I am excited to support youth-serving teams imagine and create new, innovative solutions that make waves in adolescent health well-being,” Christy shared. “I love nerding out on connecting imagination to innovation, creativity, and joy!”

Before joining Healthy Teen Network, Christy worked at the National Coalition of STD Directors (NCSD), where she provided technical and capacity-building assistance to state health departments and state education agencies. Her work focused on strengthening safe, supportive, and inclusive adolescent sexual health education and services nationwide. She also previously served as an STI Program Supervisor with the Florida Department of Health, where she delivered sexual health education, testing, and counseling; led community outreach initiatives; and strengthened connections between schools and community organizations in underserved areas across Central and Southwest Florida.

Christy’s commitment to equity also extends into research. She serves as an active community advisor on national research projects focused on reproductive health, access, and policy, where she amplifies community voices, supports equitable research practices, and helps shape resources that center those most affected by systemic inequities.

Christy earned her Master of Public Health from the University of South Florida, where her thesis examined racial disparities in maternal health care, with a focus on the experiences of Black women in the South. She also holds a Bachelor of Science in Health Services Administration from the University of Central Florida.

Her passion for this work is deeply personal. Reflecting on her own sex education experience, Christy shared, “I wish I had learned about sexual health in a way that went beyond disease and pregnancy prevention—one that embraced the reproductive justice framework and movement.” She added that this knowledge “could have transformed the path of my decisions and strengthened my confidence, knowing I had autonomy and rights as a young Black girl from an immigrant background.”

I’m thrilled to join this exceptional community of dreamers, advocates, and doers dedicated to adolescent health and well-being—approaching this work with intentional care, safety, boldness, and passion.

When asked why she wanted to join Healthy Teen Network, Christy’s answer was full of heart and vision: “I’m thrilled to join this exceptional community of dreamers, advocates, and doers dedicated to adolescent health and well-being—approaching this work with intentional care, safety, boldness, and passion.” She shared, “[it’s] an honor to stand alongside changemakers who boldly embrace the mission of social change, advocacy, innovation, and science.”

If Christy had a magic wand to improve adolescent sexual and reproductive health outcomes, she’d use it to remove barriers—completely. “I would remove all barriers that prevent access to inclusive, safe, and culturally centered sexual and reproductive health learning, services, care, and joy,” she said. Her vision includes bridging programs across “schools, communities, and third spaces where young people are free to learn, explore, and exist without judgment or shame.”

Outside of work, Christy is all about balance, joy, and community. She loves caring for herself in meaningful ways, spending quality time with family and friends, and taking spontaneous solo trips around the world. You might also find her shooting film on her vintage Canon camera, powering through a 5 a.m. strength training workout, or “obsessing over all things Beyoncé.”

We’re thrilled to have Christy join the Healthy Teen Network team and can’t wait to see how her leadership, creativity, and deep commitment to justice shape the future of our innovation and research work. Welcome, Christy!

YOUniversal Education Services

Meet the Team

José Garth is a caretaker, educator, facilitator, and the Founder of YOUniversal Education Services. Her focus is on removing barriers to health and supporting young people; she has 15 years of experience in youth development, sex education, and delivery of health interventions across Southwest Pennsylvania. This opportunity provides us with the space, freedom, trust, structure, and support to play and learn about cultivating youth power in an intentional, sustainable, and dynamic way.

One Thing They Have Already Learned
It’s been really interesting to think about the ways we’ve moved intuitively through program design in the past and to see where that lines up with the practices of human-centered design. Having language and learning more about this formalized model is already putting an incredibly helpful structure on our process, and it feels like it will support us in building a program that’s truly responsive to the people who will shape and engage with it.

What They Are Looking Forward to in Their Innovation Journey

Our own personal growth: recognizing where our biases are getting in the way of liberatory practices. Where are we getting in our own way?

Everything she does is rooted in connection, reminding us that care is a collective practice.

Their Challenge or Focus

We intend to address the needs of young people from immigrant families in sexual and reproductive health by tackling two key challenges: the lack of culturally and linguistically responsive resources and the shortage of trusted, relatable mentors.

Why They Applied

As the Rooted Collective, we each individually grew up bridging cultures. Still today, many young folks are navigating their own cultural identities while learning about adolescent sexual and reproductive health. The In/Tend Incubator Hub is an opportunity for us to co-create solutions and share power with young people in a way that closes sexual and reproductive health knowledge gaps, builds trust, and affirms their identities by connecting young people of immigrant families to accurate sexual and reproductive health resources, mentorship, and each other.

One Thing They Have Already Learned

During our time with In/Tend, we learned how to meet the needs of our extreme end users to create the most appropriate and relevant solution. We are looking forward to applying this learning to best meet the needs of young people from immigrant families.

What They Are Looking Forward to in Their Innovation Journey

We’re looking forward to implementing our learnings at the intersection of human-centered design and creativity to better support the young people we’ll work with.

She is currently a Bilingual Health Educator at Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital, where she facilitates sexual health education in various West- and Southside Spanish-speaking Chicago Public Schools. She has over five years of experience working with a range of children and adolescents within healthcare settings, community partners, and school classrooms in the greater Chicago area. Jazmin aims to better support parents and caregivers, alongside her passion for maternal and adolescent health, while still being open to talk about any pop culture drama.

Jose Dominguez Magdaleno holds a Bachelor’s in Fine Arts in Theatre Arts with a double major in Latin American and Latino Studies. They are currently a Bilingual Health Educator at Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital, where they facilitate sexual health education workshops in the City of Chicago in Latine Spanish-speaking communities. They are also drag artists who love to connect with their artistic feminine selves while creating spaces of joy and community across a range of settings (we love my drag queen, Paloma!). Jose’s dreams, hopes, and values are rooted in his upbringing as a first-generation Mexican American born and raised in the beautiful state of New Jersey.

Dr. Claudio Rivera is a bilingual clinical-community psychologist providing treatment and training in evidence-based mental health for children, adolescents, and adults in community, hospital, and school settings. He partners with young people on participatory action research to examine ways systems of care can be held accountable for improving the mental health needs of communities who are pushed to the margins. Specifically, Claudio seeks to use the tools of scientific inquiry to shift the research gaze of accountability to the structures responsible for providing care to communities that have been structurally abandoned.

Their Challenge or Focus

Our team wishes to address the intersection of mental well-being with sexual health education through a social justice, trauma-informed, and cultural awareness lens to Spanish-speaking Latine parents/caregivers. Through this process, we wish to engage community members, such as masculine figures who might not often be in the room. We will accomplish this engagement by creating and developing an all-encompassing sexual-health education workshop within a mental wellness scope as a means to allow parents and caregivers to start sexual health conversations with their young people, regardless of parental/caregiver role.

Why They Applied

Our team sought to apply to the In/Tend Incubator Hub to discover new opportunities for engagement and learning with our Latine Spanish-speaking caregivers. We recognize that we may not have all the tools to deliver an all-encompassing curriculum workshop, but we have the right passion and ambition.

In/Tend can help guide our passion project by helping us break free from tunnel vision and build new strategies for thinking.

In/Tend can help guide our passion project by helping us break free from tunnel vision and build new strategies for thinking. Additionally, joining In/Tend allows us to expand resources, connections, and opportunities for our Latine community in Chicago, which faces a scarcity of sexual health education materials. We are extremely grateful that In/Tend opens a window of opportunity for us to meet other organizations in the U.S that also share similar project goals and can also be a source of support. Our team is extremely satisfied with our decision to choose In/Tend, as their coaching helps us center our work on our Latine community and will eventually help us grow as public health professionals.

One Thing They Have Already Learned

One thing our team has learned in our first weeks in the Hub is how we can branch out and find new tools to help us plan our project. Being introduced to and encouraged to use the collaboration platform Miro has really opened our teams’ eyes to innovative ways to take notes, create checklists, and have a space to be artistic. Each team member is used to falling back on the old, boring drawing board or paper-and-pencil method, so having to use a new application has allowed us to try something new as a team. We are thankful our In/Tend colleagues have taken the time to make the project innovative and enjoyable.

What They Are Looking Forward to in Their Innovation Journey

In our first weeks with the Hub, our team has learned valuable lessons about how we approach ideas and solutions. Each team member has experience in facilitating parent/caregiver workshops and has helped create educational material and resource guides. Naturally, we have come to believe that we are somewhat credible experts in adult and youth sexual health services. As every good professional, we are stepping out of our comfort zone and trying something new. Our team wishes to start at the beginning and pivot to how we can improve the way we deliver sexual health education, while also connecting it to mental wellness.

Ultimately, one thing we are looking forward to is starting fresh and learning from our parents/caregivers what they themselves need guidance with, instead of us coming in with what “we believe” is best for them. Our team strives to be part of the community alongside parents and caregivers, rather than a third party entering the community. Within the innovation journey, we are looking forward to opening our minds to new ways of thinking and avoiding old habits.

Long lost sandbox

I used to have a sandbox in my backyard filled with gritty, commercial grade sand from the local hardware store. Ants and beetles would make their home in the decaying wooden frame, and weeds poked their way through the tarp separating the pit from the ground. Inside I had buckets, shovels, my favorite sticks and rocks, action figures, and Hot Wheels. I’d spend hours plopped in that sand creating worlds, potions, and magic out of nothing.

Then I grew up, and the sandbox became a square hole in the ground with old toys and no appeal for play—proving the worlds I created had little to do with sand and rusty Hot Wheels, and everything to do with my mindset and imagination.

It’s been a long road home to the metaphorical sandbox for me, and Human-Centered and Liberatory Design have become my new shovel and bucket.

We condition kids out of play far too young, and for many adults play is a distant memory. Instead of leaf and dirt concoctions in a bucket of water, we create deadlines and apply pressure to creation. It’s been a long road home to the metaphorical sandbox for me, and Human-Centered and Liberatory Design have become my new shovel and bucket.

Liberatory Design: Helps interrupt power dynamics and increase opportunity for those who have historically faced mistreatment and barriers.

Human-Centered Design: Puts real people at the center of the development process, enabling you to create products and services that resonate and are tailored to your audience’s needs.

Our jobs are like trying to blow out a birthday cake full of trick candles

My team and I were selected for the first cohort of the In/Tend Incubator Hub last October, and by November, we found ourselves in a tumultuous season of our professional and personal lives that made the idea of play laughable. The three of us work for a nonprofit called the Transformation Project that serves the youth community in South Dakota, no matter who they are or who they love. As the social landscape rapidly shifted, so did the needs of our community.

Anyone who works in the nonprofit world knows how hard it is to just breathe sometimes. We’re passionate about the people we serve, and we want to create quick solutions for urgent needs. Human-Centered Design in the context of the In/Tend cohort challenged us to shift this paradigm—to slow down in the mess instead of immediately trying to clean it up.

We were like three grown adults learning to use a sandbox again: First, it seemed pointless, then it was uncomfortable, and then we remembered how to have fun in it.

Mountains and anchors

In the first part of the design phase, we were asked to come up with a “how might we” statement, summarizing our main challenge in the form of a question. For our challenge, making sex ed for all the norm in rural South Dakota, coming up with this question was daunting. Asking “how might we?” implied the possibility of ever finding a solution.

But as we continued the process through critical reflection, interviewing and empathizing with our end users, defining our challenge, ideating on our solution, and testing our prototype, our “how might we” became less of a mountain to climb and more of an anchor keeping us grounded in the needs of our end users.

Subconsciously, this taught me how to anchor myself in my own personal convictions despite upheaval and uncertainty. As a type A, perfectionistic Capricorn, when the world is a mess around me, I scramble to clean everything up. The design process has taught me that it’s ok to leave the mess for now and go back to what grounds me into my purpose. After I’ve taken a large inhale, I’m much more prepared to tackle the long hike uphill.

Mad scientists

Through various brainstorming sessions, creative warm-ups, and dozens of nonsensical sticky notes, I forgot about perfection and pressure somewhere along the way. I remembered that ideas are endless, and generative thinking is done best during a good belly laugh with your team. In a climate that wants to see changemakers burn out and give up, Human-Centered Design gave me and my team the opportunity to step out of the disarray we can’t control and into a creative chaos of our own making.

By the time our last in-person session with In/Tend in Memphis rolled around in March, my team and I were mad scientists: crouched on the floor of the conference room around a giant Venn diagram, slapping sticky notes on every surface available, and using fidget toys and play dough to make board game pieces that looked like bugs. Our challenges seemed smaller and our playground bigger. Most importantly, our ideas were better because we allowed ourselves for just a moment to remove the impossibly high stakes set against us.

We all came out of the In/Tend Incubator Hub more resilient and adaptable as individuals and professionals. Those are valuable qualities to cultivate organizationally and to instill in the young people we work with. Yes, the needs of our community are urgent, and I want to sink my hands as deep as I can into the mess of it to see what I can draw up and mold.

I

t’s not always realistic to implement the entire human-centered design (HCD) process in every project. Even if you are well versed in HCD, time, resources, or stakeholder buy-in might limit how far you can go. But that doesn’t mean you can’t still incorporate some of its most powerful tools and mindsets.

Ideation is all about exploring possibilities. It’s where creativity, curiosity, and collaboration shine.

One of the easiest, quickest, and most adaptable pieces of HCD you can integrate into your work is ideation. Ideation is the process of generating lots of ideas, without judgment, in a short period of time. Ideation is all about exploring possibilities. It’s where creativity, curiosity, and collaboration shine.

Ideation also helps you practice essential HCD mindsets, like deferring judgment, embracing ambiguity, thinking expansively, and building on others’ ideas, in a short period of time. A quick ideation session can infuse energy into your team, unlock surprising solutions, and shift how people approach challenges, even if you only have 15 minutes. It pushes us to think in new ways, which can feel uncomfortable at first. It challenges our assumptions, encourages us to take a non-linear approach, and asks us to hold off on jumping to solutions. Instead of judging ideas too quickly, we learn to stay open, listen deeply, and focus on the real experiences of the people we’re designing for. While this shift can be difficult, it leads to more creative, meaningful, and lasting solutions for the communities we serve.

At its core, human-centered design is a way of solving problems that starts with understanding the people most affected by a defined challenge.

At its core, human-centered design is a way of solving problems that starts with understanding the people most affected by a defined challenge. Instead of assuming we know what will work, we take time to listen, test ideas, and refine solutions based on real feedback. It’s an ongoing process of learning and improving to create solutions that truly meet people’s needs.

Through Sprout: A Design Challenge, a part of In/Tend, we built a hands-on, beginner-friendly, learning experience where participants could explore and apply human-centered design in real time. By running two iterations of Sprout, we learned these ten strategies that make teaching and learning human-centered design a little easier and increased the percentage of participants who said they would be able to apply human-centered design to their work to 100%. These strategies can be used by anyone who is hoping to share human-centered design, whether it is socially among colleagues or through an incubator like In/Tend:

1. Use a Visual to Show the Design Process

A clear visual of the human-centered design process helps participants understand where they are and where they’re going. Revisiting this often provides context, reinforces connections between steps, and helps people stay grounded in what can feel like a messy process.

2. Emphasize Mindsets Alongside Methods

Teaching human-centered design is about more than just following steps—it’s about shifting how people think. Encouraging creative confidence, comfort with ambiguity, and designing with rather than for others is just as important as teaching the process itself. Revisiting these mindsets throughout the experience helps participants recognize when they are embracing (or resisting) them.

3. Incorporate Creative Warm-Ups to Reinforce Mindsets

Human-centered design mindsets like learning from failure, empathy, and self-awareness aren’t always easy to access on demand. Short creative exercises, along with reflection on them, can help participants shift into a design mindset before diving into their challenge.

4. Provide Clear Instructions

Human-centered design is already complex, so instructions for activities should be as clear as possible. Step-by-step guides or reference materials help participants stay on track once they begin working.

5. Use a Case Study Slightly Outside Participants’ Expertise

Working through a case study of a human-centered design challenge can help participants practice the process, rather than doing it hypothetically. Select a challenge that may be outside the typical area of expertise for your participants so they can focus on the process, rather than getting bogged down in the complex problem space. A strong design challenge provides enough detail to be realistic and clearly communicates the guidelines but still allows room for creativity.

6. Create Space for Collaboration and Peer Learning

Human-centered design is a collaborative process, and learning it should be, too. Participants need time to work in and across teams, problem-solve together, and test ideas. Opportunities for teams to share insights and approaches also expose them to different ways of thinking.

7. Keep the Scale of Learning Manageable

Human-centered design is complex and includes dozens of methods. Learning all of this at once can be overwhelming. Keeping the scale of content taught aligned with the time available ensures participants can learn and apply the methods. Learning a few methods deeply is better than learning too many methods at only a high-level.

8. Make Activities Hands-On

Learning human-centered design requires practice. Participants should practice methods by conducting real interviews, engaging in hands-on brainstorming, and building prototypes rather than just discussing ideas.

Tip: If real users aren’t available to work with, teams can create personas and assign a teammate to act as a user. This approach keeps the experience interactive and practical.

9. The Right Space Makes a Difference

A well-designed and creative environment supports better learning. A space with breakout areas, wall space for mapping ideas, and (if possible) natural light encourages movement, collaboration, and creativity.

10. Share Opportunities for Application and Adaptation

The entire human-centered design process isn’t necessary for every problem. Helping participants identify which parts of human-centered design they can apply in different situations—and recognizing the elements they may already be using—makes the approach more adaptable. Principles like empathy, brainstorming, iteration, and centering the needs of those impacted can be integrated into everyday work without requiring a full design challenge.

When I was starting my professional life, I had the opportunity to work at a company that was preparing thoughtful, handmade gifts for potential partners and investors. My boss was especially proud of the team’s efforts; they had meticulously researched each partner’s culture and interests to ensure the gifts were meaningful. One of my responsibilities was to ensure the gifts were beautifully wrapped—a seemingly simple yet important task.

Eager to impress, I carefully selected elegant white wrapping paper with silver and gold accents, confident it would make the gifts look stunning. But when we presented the first gift to our Japanese partners, their reactions caught me off guard. They frowned and appeared uncomfortable. My boss was upset, and I couldn’t understand why.

Later, I learned that in Japanese culture, white wrapping paper symbolizes death and mourning. What I thought was a thoughtful presentation had sent the wrong message. I was mortified by what felt like a massive failure. But in hindsight, that experience taught me lessons I carry to this day: the importance of cultural awareness, attention to detail, and understanding context. Without this misstep, I wouldn’t have gained those valuable insights.

Failure, as uncomfortable as it can be, often provides lessons success cannot. This is particularly true in the world of innovation, where failure isn’t just inevitable—it’s essential.

For four days in May, seven teams, made up of three individuals each, got hands-on with human-centered design to tackle a real-world challenge at Sprout: A Design Challenge, hosted by In/Tend, the Innovation Hub by Healthy Teen Network. Imagine it as a human-centered design boot camp—lots of learning, lots of doing, with a coach to guide every step of the way!

Over the four days, teams moved through the entire human-centered design process, from challenge definition to user engagement to ideas and prototypes. This opportunity was specifically designed for human-centered design newbies, crafted for teams with little to no human-centered design experience to gain confidence in the skills and mindsets of the methodology by working through a real challenge.

Design challenges are an opportunity to move through the entire human-centered design process, a process that usually takes months, in just a few days. Human-centered design is an approach to problem-solving commonly used in the development of new products and services that centers the human experience, especially that of the ultimate end user of the product and embraces generative brainstorming for innovative ideas and multiple rounds of testing and iteration. Sprout participants moved through this process in three phases, using the model developed by IDEO.

Inspiration

The Inspiration phase involves understanding the needs and motivations of users through research and empathy, setting the groundwork for design. This phase typically includes challenge definition, which for this learning experience was pre-determined to ensure everyone was working on the same challenge, and no one team had too much additional expertise that would hinder their ability to embrace the learning that comes from user engagement. Therefore, we tackled the redesign of high school student-service learning programs to make them as engaging as a video game. Participants completed secondary research, two user interviews with youth personas, and an analogous inspiration experience.

Ideation

The Ideation phase focuses on generating a wide range of creative ideas and solutions through brainstorming and collaborative thinking. Participants used rapid brainstorming techniques to generate 25+ ideas per team that they clustered into themes and distilled down to a single concept.

Implementation

The Implementation phase involves turning ideas into tangible products or services through prototyping, testing, and refining based on feedback. Participants developed increasingly complex prototypes of their concept, improving the design based on feedback from other teams and user personas.

Human-centered design teaches us that there is no one better to teach us about an experience than the ones who lived it. To learn more about Sprout, please enjoy this post-challenge conversation between Emily, a design coach and challenge facilitator and Deb, a Thrivology Youth Leader and Sprout participant. View the prototype Deb’s team, Black Lavender, created.

Emily: “Hi Deb! It is so good to see you again. Tell me, what motivated you to participate in the design challenge?”

Deb: “I saw the opportunity and was thinking it’ll be really good for us [Black Lavender] because I know my friends, Alexis Pittman and Mari Tomlinson, have done research in the past, and I have an interest in continuing my research journey, so I reached out to them in our group chat to set up a Zoom call. We discussed it, and then we decided, ‘Okay, let’s apply for it!’

“We saw in the application that we had to submit a video, so we planned out what we wanted to do, script-wise because we wanted to showcase our skills and who we are. We decided to meet at this Botanical Garden in Winter Park, close to Orlando, and shoot outside. It was really fun being able to utilize the ‘I’m passing the phone’ trend from TikTok to convey our passion behind reproductive health and reproductive justice, showcasing, our friendship, and wanting to be part of this design challenge.”

Black Lavender’s application video.

Emily: “I remember the feedback that you got from other participants right at the end of the challenge was that your final product reflected both who you all are and the design process; it was really good mix. Thinking about where you ended up, I love getting to hear about the beginning of your story working together. What was the process like of getting to that final design?”

Deb: “I’ve been involved in research in different ways, but I never really saw the process of looking at problems outside of literature reviews and conducting interviews or surveys in academia. This felt completely different. With Black Lavender, I got to see the problem and get feedback from those who were facing the problem first rather than only asking questions about what we saw was missing as a group. We were able to work with other groups to get feedback repeatedly on our prototype to make it better.”

“We had to make sure that what we were doing was not just to do it but that people who needed it would utilize it. With each piece of feedback we received, we tweaked what we might need to remove, add, or keep. I really enjoyed that process a lot because it was nice to work through things in separate stages instead of rushing them all together.”

Emily: “Yeah, we worked through things in those three phases: inspiration, ideation and implementation, and then in smaller activities within each phase. What phase did you find most fun and engaging?”

Deb: “I like the process where we came up with all these different ideas from the inspiration stage. It was interactive and really nice being able to take the sticky notes on our large paper and just come up with endless ideas and then, from there, group the different ideas together with our teammates and see, ‘Okay, these two stickies go together, and these 3 go together.’ I know as a Thrivology Youth Leader, we did a lot of that with the research we do and provide feedback on through Miro [a virtual sticky board], so it was really nice to see that happen in person as I’ve seen it happen over Zoom.

Emily: “Cool, yeah being able to actually pick up your ideas and move them around is such an engaging way to do ideation. Which of the phases was the most challenging for y’all?”

Deb: “The inspiration was a little bit challenging. It was so nice to figure out what the problem is and see the different perspectives within it. However, I felt that sometimes, it’s so easy to want to rush through things because of the eagerness to get to the end product. I really appreciate how this challenge really pushed me to slow down. I think that’s really important, instead of always just rushing into it. With the focus on Student Service Learning, it was different than I was expecting. We were informed that it wouldn’t be reproductive justice based, that that would be part of In/Tend.”

“Because I haven’t been in high school for a while, it was cool to go back and think back to what it was like for me and what I would have liked to utilize to grow as a person while navigating being a teenager and the missing pieces that existed at the time. Since I graduated from high school in 2018, I also had to acknowledge the differences then compared to now with the Pandemic and navigating it as we are post-lockdown.”

Emily: “Yeah being able to put yourself in the shoes of the user is both hard and rewarding. As you reflect on the whole experience, what advice would you give others considering participating in a design challenge?”

Deb: “I would really say be yourself when applying. You can be honest about your experience. This challenge design will teach you all the skills you’ll need to know, and you’ll have facilitators who will support you. Dive into your creativity to stand out and be proud of the skills that you and your team have learned and earned that have brought you to this point!”

“I felt really comfortable during the design challenge, and I felt I could just be myself while being in an educational, interactive, and fun space. I think so many people bring so many different aspects of themselves when they do different things, and it can sometimes be intimidating to feel like, ‘Oh, I don’t have as much experience, and maybe I shouldn’t apply,’ but I think if you’re interested in doing Sprout next year or doing anything with Healthy Teen Network you don’t have to know every single thing.”

“I knew a little bit about human-centered design through Thrivology, but I really gained more confidence through this design challenge in knowing more about what it can do. So, I think being yourself and open-minded are things you need to bring. I think that anyone who’s really interested in getting out of their comfort zone and bringing themselves to the table should definitely apply next year.”
