									<p>We’ve all seen examples of the young person who is eager to show up for one class but consistently ends up in the nurse&#8217;s office during another. Then there is the teen with a 4.0 who quietly stops going to school, risking graduation due to low attendance. And we all know kids who thrive in their activities outside of school but seem to do the bare minimum during the regular school day. Why is this?</p><p>There are many explanations. But one comes up again and again with the teens I support—and the research backs it up: social connection. Here is how I often hear it expressed:</p><p><em>&#8220;I don&#8217;t have any friends in that class.&#8221;</em> <em>&#8220;That teacher doesn&#8217;t like me.&#8221;</em> <em>&#8220;I feel put on the spot when I get called on.&#8221;</em> <em>&#8220;I can&#8217;t focus.&#8221;</em></p><blockquote class="et-pullquote left"><p>The science is clear: We need human connection to survive.</p></blockquote><p><a href="https://news.harvard.edu/gazette/story/2025/02/is-social-connection-a-basic-need-like-food-water/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The science is clear:</a> We need human connection to survive. Across social species, <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6125010/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">it is one of the strongest predictors of how long and how well we live</a>. For adolescents, <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7292584/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the drive for belonging is especially intense</a>. When a teen feels like they don&#8217;t belong—at school, at home, among their peers—the same part of the brain that registers physical pain lights up.</p><p>It hurts that much.</p><p>Feeling excluded sets off a neurobiological threat response. Your heart rate climbs, blood rushes to your large muscles, your body readies itself to fight or flee. When fighting or fleeing are not possible (e.g., you can’t leave the place that feels scary), your nervous system shifts into freeze. Cortisol keeps your inner engine racing at full throttle, so you are hyper-aroused on the inside and completely paralyzed on the outside.</p><p>Under threat, the brain protects you by shutting down the very machinery you need for social engagement and learning. Clear thinking, working memory, impulse control—the work of the prefrontal cortex—go offline. From the outside, it can look like a teen who refuses to go to school. Who knows the answers but is unable to perform on the test. Who has chronic headaches, or a stomach that&#8217;s always upset. Who is quick to anger. Who reaches for alcohol or drugs to soothe the pain.</p><p>Each of these is a sign of a nervous system under distress.</p><p>I think of a young person in my practice who told me, down to the period, which class she had one friend in—and which ones she didn&#8217;t. The classes with a friend, she walked into. The ones without, she found a reason to be somewhere else. Same kid. Same brain. Different conditions.</p><p>Here&#8217;s the hopeful part. Connection doesn&#8217;t just feel good. It buffers stress at the level of the body. When we are near people we trust, the brain literally <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4375548/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">outsources the work of managing threat</a>.</p><p><a href="https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1111/j.1467-9280.2006.01832.x?__cf_chl_f_tk=huxy74oHUFb4rIlI9uN0DjrXgY56k1Memj7UpIa0AAs-1782787105-1.0.1.1-T7QJCY8OBOAgvF2ZlACPwqt1VvFd6astKLku" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Experiments using fMRI </a>imaging have shown that when a person faces a threat (like an electric shock) completely alone, the prefrontal cortex burns enormous amounts of energy to manage the fear. Give that same person a trusted hand to hold, and the prefrontal cortex goes quiet. The brain saves the energy because it no longer has to face the danger by itself.</p><p>This reaction explains why we feel less fearful and more capable when we are with people we trust.</p><p>When a teen feels safe and connected, their brain can stop scanning for danger. All that freed-up energy can be redirected into social and academic engagement, memory consolidation, and deep learning. Teens who feel secure in their relationships are more likely to show up, take risks, be curious, contribute, and dream.</p><blockquote class="et-pullquote left"><p>Belonging is a biological experience that is foundational to healthy development.</p></blockquote><p>Belonging is a biological experience that is foundational to healthy development.</p><p>But belonging doesn&#8217;t just happen. We have to design for it—and then monitor it with the same attention and rigor as we do other important measures. It may in fact be the most important thing to measure since it is predictive of so many other outcomes—including longevity.</p><p>There are many <a href="https://tll.mit.edu/sense-of-belonging-matters/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">research-based strategies</a> to increase belonging that have had positive results, but no one strategy works for every teen in every place. This is why it is critical that we partner <em>with </em>young people in our communities and listen deeply to understand what they are experiencing, what they need, and what they hope for. It is especially important to invite young people who are part of marginalized groups into the co-design process; they are more likely to experience ‘<a href="https://behavioralscientist.org/understanding-and-overcoming-belonging-uncertainty/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">belonging uncertainty</a>,’ and it is critical that any effort to increase social connection and belonging centers their experiences, needs, and ideas.</p><p>The teen in the nurse&#8217;s office, the 4.0 student who stops showing up—there is nothing ‘wrong’ with them. They are telling us that something about the conditions we have created is not working for them.</p><p><em>Want to learn more about the neuroscience of connection? 									<p>Summer often brings a shift in pace. School is out, routines and schedules change, and communities come alive in different ways. Warm weather fills neighborhood parks with families and friends, concert venues and fields buzz with excitement, and sports fans gather to cheer on their favorite teams. Whether it&#8217;s attending a local festival, watching a match with friends, or spending more time outdoors, summer can create opportunities for connection, growth, and joy.</p><p>As I think about Healthy Teen Network&#8217;s upcoming conference, <em><a href="https://www.healthyteennetwork.org/conference/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Made to Belong</a></em>, and its focus on connection, community, and coming together, I find myself reflecting on the ways summer helped shape my own sense of belonging and connection.</p><h4><strong>The Summers That Shape Us</strong></h4><p>This reflection brings me back to how I spent my summers as a teen. Those memories carry a sense of nostalgia that I often find myself recreating in my summer plans today. I think of weekends spent at Florida&#8217;s many beaches, cookouts and fireworks with family, volunteering at our local community center, creating playlists with my siblings and cousins filled with our favorite summer jams, and exploring new interests like photography and piano. Looking back, those experiences offered more than entertainment or a way to pass the time. They helped me build relationships, discover new skills, and develop a stronger sense of self and community. I always found myself entering the new school year feeling recharged, inspired, and connected to myself in new ways.</p><blockquote class="et-pullquote left"><p>The moments that helped me feel connected, supported, and inspired as a young person continue to shape how I build community, pursue new interests, and find joy in adulthood.</p></blockquote><p>While these moments may seem simple, they can play an important role in supporting young people&#8217;s well-being. Summer can be a season of discovery and often creates space for experiences that are harder to find during the school year. This free time can provide opportunities to try something new, spend time with people who support and encourage them, and engage with their communities in meaningful ways. These experiences can help shape how young people see themselves and their place in the world. Perhaps that&#8217;s why I find myself recreating so many of those experiences today. The moments that helped me feel connected, supported, and inspired as a young person continue to shape how I build community, pursue new interests, and find joy in adulthood.</p><h4><strong>Creating Spaces for Connection, Growth, and Joy</strong></h4><p>This summer, many people are finding connection through shared experiences, whether gathering with friends to watch the World Cup, attending a local concert, participating in community celebrations, or simply spending time with loved ones outdoors. These moments remind us that belonging often grows through shared experiences.</p><p>When young people see themselves as part of a team or fan group, a volunteer group, or a community gathering, they can begin to build meaningful connections that support their growth and well-being. 									<p>This year, Healthy Teen Network’s conference theme is <em><a href="https://www.healthyteennetwork.org/conference/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Made to Belong</a></em>, highlighting the importance of connecting, finding community, and coming together. This April, I had the opportunity to put this theme into practice by leading an activity during our annual staff gathering that embodied that feeling. Part of the activity involved making a song together, so armed with maracas, tambourines, and egg shakers, I encouraged my coworkers to make a beat. The goal wasn’t to create the most beautiful sound in the world; it was to come together and make something unique and have fun!</p><blockquote class="et-pullquote left"><p>We worked together as a team, made fun memories, and created something special. That’s the power of music.</p></blockquote><p>As I looked around the room and saw my coworkers shaking their instruments, laughing with one another and trying their hardest to stay on beat, I could feel something shift. Did we make the next trending song of 2026? Not even close! But we made something that was ours. We worked together as a team, made fun memories, and created something special. That’s the power of music.</p><p>Music has always been a big part of my life. I first joined band and began playing various instruments in elementary school. In 4<sup>th</sup> grade, my cello was bigger than I was, and I was dedicated to lugging it around school like a champ. I have fond memories of sharing my earbuds with friends on the bus ride home from middle school. In high school, I took to the stage and sang my heart out alongside friends as we performed musicals like <em>Into the Woods</em> and <em>The Wizard of Oz</em>.</p><h4><strong>Music as connection</strong></h4><p>Even now, as an adult, music continues to play an important role in my life. It helps me connect with others and build meaningful bonds, which is especially valuable when the world around me can feel scary and uncertain.</p><p>Unsurprisingly, there is a scientific reason why music makes us feel good and draws us to one another. Researchers believe it is directly related to rhythm. Moving to a beat helps synchronize our brains and bodies. When we do that in a group, it can strengthen our sense of community, release dopamine and endorphins (the neurotransmitters responsible for pleasure and mood boosts), and create social cohesion.</p><p><a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3217964/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">One study by Idil Kokal</a> asked two-year-olds to synchronize their dancing to a drumbeat, and the results were insightful and adorable. To keep it simple, when one child started to lose focus or drift off beat, the other would jump in to help. These children began as strangers, but dancing together transformed them into the cutest dance team you’ve ever seen. If that’s not a great example of the power of community within music, I don’t know what is!</p><h4><strong>Music as community</strong></h4><p>One of my favorite parts about music is how deeply it is woven into so many cultures. As a Black American, I find that music runs deep in my culture and has connected my people for generations. A perfect example are my family’s summer cookouts. During the summer, friends and family gather around and enjoy food, games, and of course, music! The songs that incorporate line dances are my favorite, because as soon as the first notes of a song begin to play, everyone rushes to the dance floor. It’s a magical moment. You can feel the energy in the air as everyone dances in sync. People are laughing, jumping around, and even if you get a move wrong, there’s no shame, just laughter (and maybe some light teasing!). Grandparents, uncles, teenagers, and even toddlers wiggle to the beat, performing dances that have been passed down from generation to generation. After the dance is over, we giggle, hug, and share stories, deepening our connections while music continues to play in the background.</p><blockquote class="et-pullquote left"><p>If you are inspired to find community through music, there are so many ways to do it!</p></blockquote><p>If you are inspired to find community through music, there are so many ways to do it! Concerts are an easy way to find people. I can’t count the number of times I’ve made friends while waiting in a long concert line or turned to the stranger next to me to sing along to our favorite song, instantly connected by our shared love of the same artist.</p><p>If loud concert venues aren’t your thing, consider checking out community events in your city. Many communities host a variety of music-related gatherings, from drum circles to live jazz performances. Maybe you&#8217;re like me and played an instrument in school, but it&#8217;s now tucked away in a closet. This could be the perfect time to brush up on your skills, invite some friends over for a jam session, or sit down at a public piano and see who stops to listen or chat. 									<p><span class="et-dropcap">Y</span>ou could say we’ve done this a few times. As a capacity-building organization, our staff is well-versed in how to give an effective presentation. Here are some tips to help you design and facilitate effective presentations.</p><h4>WHEN PREPARING YOUR PRESENTATION…</h4><p><strong>Make it fun!</strong><br />Be creative and authentic in your design, title, and description. A little humor never hurts!</p><p><strong>Clearly identify the intended, appropriate audience.</strong><br />It is important to identify who the presentation is for, so you can tailor the content of the presentation. Focusing your design on a specific audience makes the presentation feel relevant and relatable for the participants.</p><p><strong>Write a catchy, creative title and a clear, detailed description.</strong><br />Participants want to be able to make appropriate choices when planning their schedule, so they need to know who your presentation is for, what they are going to learn or be able to do, and why it is important to them.</p><p><strong>Incorporate new ideas and the latest research.</strong><br />Participants are attending your presentation to learn what is NEW! Make sure your content is relevant to what is happening today.</p><p><strong>Time your presentation well and present an appropriate amount of content.</strong><br />It’s tempting to pack too much content into a short session, but learners will feel more satisfied knowing something really well, rather than feeling rushed and unclear about a large amount of information. Consider how much background and contextual content is really needed in the beginning of your session so you have plenty of time to present the crux of the content. And be sure to allow time for questions.</p><p><strong>Use adult learning principles.</strong><br />Adult learning principles can help you understand how your audience learns, so that you can deliver your content in a way that will be most accessible. Remember—what you are saying matters as much as how you are saying it.</p><p><strong>Avoid lectures.</strong><br />People learn better when they feel involved and when content is processed through their own experience. Avoid telling participants information—instead, help them make discoveries themselves.<br />Break up the presentation with various learning strategies.<br />Active learning strategies help your participants get engaged and involved in your presentation. There are tons of active learning activities. Choose one (or a few) to incorporate into your presentation!</p><p><strong>Use appealing visual aids.</strong><br />If using PowerPoint or similar software, follow appropriate slide design principles. It’s helpful for learners to have a visual aid, but remember, the presentation is about you, not the slides, so do not make the slides a script for, or the focus of, the entire presentation.</p><p><strong>Provide helpful materials, but don’t overwhelm your participants.</strong><br />It can be useful for participants to have a tip sheet or a summary of some key information from the presentation, but too many materials can be overwhelming. Providing participants with all the information and notes can make them feel like they do not need to be engaged.</p><p><strong>Prepare a detailed design, so another person could give the same presentation.</strong><br />Maybe someone else in your organization wants to deliver the presentation again. A detailed design will make the presentation replicable, increasing organizational capacity. And of course, we never know what emergencies may pop up, so it’s important that another facilitator could easily follow your presentation design.</p><p><strong>Run through your presentation in advance.</strong><br />If possible, facilitate a pilot presentation. Practice, practice, practice! Get feedback from colleagues or friends.</p><p><!-- /wp:paragraph --></p>								</div>

									<h4>WHEN FACILITATING YOUR PRESENTATION…</h4><p><strong>Keep it fun!</strong><br />Same as with your design, be creative and authentic in your delivery…and humor always helps!</p><p><strong>Leverage participants’ experiences.</strong><br />Provide opportunities for discussion and sharing. If learners understand the relevance of the content to their own experiences, it can help them process and retain the information. Also, by sharing experiences, we can all learn from each other.</p><p><strong>Save time for questions and feedback.</strong><br />Allocate at least 10 minutes at the end of the presentation for a question-and-answer session and evaluation. Did you meet your objectives? The best way to improve is to get feedback from the participants! Save adequate time at the end for Q&amp;A and evaluation.</p><p><strong>Let them know how to follow up.</strong><br />Provide information for further resources, as well as your contact information. Your participants may think of questions later or need more information when it comes to applying your content. Make yourself and other resources available to them, so they can really apply their knowledge. </p>								</div>

									<p>Last month, adolescent health professionals from across the country gathered in Atlanta, Georgia, for <em>In Solidarity</em>, the <a href="https://www.healthyteennetwork.org/conference/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">annual national conference</a> hosted by Launch partner Healthy Teen Network. <em>In Solidarity </em>invited attendees to reflect on what it truly means to stand together—across movements, across communities, and especially within our own field of adolescent sexual and reproductive health.</p><p>Conferences like #HealthyTeen25 can supercharge innovation, concentrating knowledge exchange, feedback, and inspiration in one collaborative space. Some of the highlights included the Innovation Showcase and the innovation track of breakout sessions. </p>								</div>

									<p>As we reflect back on another unforgettable Healthy Teen Network conference, our hearts are full—and our sense of solidarity has never been stronger.</p><p>The outside world feels so chaotic right now, a feeling of constant fires that require our attention; it is exhausting to sift through. And that is on purpose! It is meant to exhaust us, to make us numb, and to distract us from the actual, real, and very important work we all aim to do each and every day.</p><blockquote class="et-pullquote left"><p>It might feel lonely right now as we continue our work under these upside down and challenging conditions, but you are not alone.</p></blockquote><p>We are in a really hard part of the journey. But I take strength in the fact that we aren’t alone in believing all young people, all people, have the right to be who they are, love who they love, have access to support and services, and the right to bodily autonomy to help them flourish and thrive. It might feel lonely right now as we continue our work under these upside down and challenging conditions, but you are not alone.</p><p>Over the course of the three days, the theme of <em>In Solidarity </em>invited us to reflect on what it truly means to stand together—across movements, across communities, and especially within our own field of adolescent sexual and reproductive health.</p>								</div>

									<h4><strong>Monday: Defining Solidarity</strong></h4><p>Our first day grounded us in the “why” of solidarity. Through the powerful words of <strong>Adaku Utah</strong> from the Building Movement Project, we were reminded that:</p><h5>“In solidarity, we seek joy and justice, especially when the weight of the world seems too heavy to bear alone.”</h5><h5>“Solidarity does not begin with us. And it will not end with us.”</h5><p>Adaku called us to honor our inner wisdom and to recognize that this work—our work—is <em>generational</em>.</p><p>That evening, the <strong>Sweet Tea Social</strong> brought the perfect balance of reflection and joy. Between live music from The Groovy Groove Band, artmaking, and the photo booth, attendees celebrated community and connection in true Healthy Teen Network fashion.</p>								</div>

As <strong>Anaia Clyburn</strong> from Advocates for Youth reminded us:</p><h5>“When communities unite, they build power.”</h5><h5>“Healthier sexual and reproductive outcomes don’t just happen <em>to</em> us—they happen <em>with</em> us [young people].”</h5>								</div>

One person who attended the BIPOC Connect shared that, “Theresa’s spoken word performance and raw vulnerability inspired others to share their inner thoughts through poetry, exhibiting the healing power of creative expression.&#8221; Another attendee who attended the Queer Connect shared how Adaku’s skillful facilitation helped create a “safe enough” space for real feeling—tears, hugs, and all.</p>								</div>

									<h4><strong>Wednesday: Coming Together in the Work Ahead</strong></h4><p>Our closing day called us back to the heart of our mission: solidarity in action. Jaclyn Friedman, Founder and Executive Director of EducateUS, helped us examine the real threats facing our field—from censorship to erasure—and offered tangible strategies to combat these attacks <em>together</em>. She shared one of her favorite quotes from an anonymous source that captures how we need to move forward:</p><h5>“Change moves at the speed of relationships. 									<p>From day one, when Healthy Teen Network was founded in 1979 as the National Organization for Adolescent Pregnancy and Parenting (NOAPP), we have not only affirmed but often been one of the few national organizations working to ensure young families’ access to the supports and services they need to thrive. We do this because being inclusive of and affirming young people who are pregnant or parenting ensures equity for all youth.</p><p>With the Healthy Teen Network Young Parent Achievement Award, we recognize someone who has met the challenges of early parenting, has achieved extraordinary personal and/or professional success, and demonstrates phenomenal leadership.</p><p>The Healthy Teen Network Young Parent Achievement Award not only recognizes young parents—it celebrates them and their accomplishments, for themselves and their families.</p><p>Last month, at the Healthy Teen Network annual conference in Atlanta, we presented Kate Westaby, PhD, with the <a href="https://www.healthyteennetwork.org/news/lighting-way-meet-healthyteen25-young-parent-achievement-awardee/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2025 Young Parent Achievement Award</a>. 									<p>My 21-year-old son is a baseball player and gets to choose walk-up songs. I was so excited that I got to choose one too, though I decided to pass on his suggestions. They were a bit more explicit than I was aiming for with this crowd. Instead, I chose a song about dancing through the lightning strikes, which felt fitting, because that’s exactly what so many young parents do.</p><p>And my 21-year-old son is the reason I became a young parent and am standing in front of you today.</p><p>I still vividly remember that life-changing moment when I was 16 and found out I was pregnant. I was in a small-town clinic in central Wisconsin—a town with no stoplights. I’d gone in because I was feeling sick, not knowing it was morning sickness. Then the nurse came in and said, “You’re pregnant.”</p><p>I remember the blood rushing to my face, my heart pounding, and thinking: “My life is over.”</p><p>I’ve interrogated that phrase in my research with other young parents—people who have a child before age 25. Why do so many of us often think “my life is over” when we find out we’re pregnant or going to have a child? What makes us believe pregnancy at a young age is untethered from our dreams and goals? Why is <em>this</em> the understanding so many of us carry?</p><blockquote class="et-pullquote left"><p>Young parents are not an exception. We are everywhere, even if systems and narratives act like we’re invisible.</p></blockquote><p>It’s important to pause here and recognize, <strong><em>this is not a rare story.</em></strong> More than one in five birthing persons will become a parent by age 25. Many of us are sitting in classrooms, working jobs, trying to finish school, and raising children at the same time. Young parents are not an exception. We are everywhere, even if systems and narratives act like we’re invisible.</p><p>And I wouldn’t be standing here, receiving this achievement award, if my life had truly been over. And I want to pause here to thank Healthy Teen Network for even creating this award because it highlights exactly what I’m talking about: Our goals<em> are</em> possible, even if the odds are often stacked against us.</p><p>It’s my hypothesis that this collective understanding—“my life is over”—is rooted in stigma. It’s internalized by young parents, has been a narrative in the pro-abortion movement, and is reinforced by systemic disinvestment.</p><p>I know this stigma deeply. In high school, other students put up posters sharing that less than 2% of teen parents get a college degree by age 30. I was so worried this was predictive and deterministic for my future. And I’m standing here telling you it’s not pregnancy that is limiting; it was the <em>way society treated me</em> because of it. That shame is not inevitable. It is constructed. And it is something we can dismantle.</p><p>In my research, I uncovered that many young parents were told some version of, “Well, you chose to have this child, so figure it out.” This illustrates the punishment young parents experience.</p><p>So I ask: How do we move toward a more balanced reproductive justice landscape for young people who become pregnant— where it’s not only “you have the right to <u>not</u> have a child,” but also “you have the right to have a child?” Where that right is not punished or leads to disinvestment.</p><blockquote class="et-pullquote left"><p>We need systems that invest in us, not abandon us.</p></blockquote><p>This balance is essential for young parents to feel supported—to feel that our dreams remain possible. Because while research shows young parenting can increase motivation, it often decreases expectations of actually achieving our dreams. We need systems that invest in us, not abandon us.</p><p>One way I’ve started this investment is by founding the <strong>Young Parent Collective (YPC).</strong></p><p>YPC was born when young moms who helped interpret my research said, “We need to do something about this.” We need to address why 42% fewer young parents are enrolled in college a few years after high school. We need to address why almost half of young parents experience dropping out of high school. It’s not because young parents don’t want these achievements.</p><p>In just its first couple of years, YPC has provided paid skill-building opportunities to more than 20 young parents across the U.S.—in research, advocacy, and leadership. The vast majority of our funding supports young parents in these positions. We launched the YPC Research and Evaluation Lab just this year, where young parents earn certificates and are now evaluating our local WIC program. We also conduct trainings about the history of young parenting narratives. Shameless plug for our roundtable on Wednesday.</p><p>Perhaps most importantly, YPC creates shared spaces where we process the shame and judgment from stigma. 									<p>The Healthy Teen Network Visionary Award honors forward-thinking, insightful, and proactive individuals or organizations committed to innovative approaches in adolescent sexual and reproductive health education and care.</p><p>Visionaries dream of the endless possibilities in education, health care, technology, and policy, ensuring that what young people learn, experience, and discover about sexuality is relevant, timely, and inspiring.</p><p>Anticipating the needs of the ever-changing lives of young people and creating holistic solutions <em>with young people </em>that cultivate equity, reduce health disparities, and are inclusive and affirming are at the core of the Healthy Teen Network Visionary Award.</p><p>Last month, at the Healthy Teen Network annual conference in Atlanta, we presented <a href="https://www.healthyteennetwork.org/news/lighting-way-meet-healthyteen25-visionary-awardee/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Natasha Ramsey, MD, MPH, FAAP, with the 2025 Visionary Award</a>. 									<p>I want to spend this time to thank Healthy Teen Network for putting together this beautiful conference and for this award.</p><p>I want to tell you a little more about myself. The name “Gorjus” was a nickname I gave myself in middle school. Remember gel pens? Yeah, I would doodle it all over my notebooks. I loved the creative arts—writing and drawing, which led to me joining the <em>Sex Etc.</em> teen magazine and website. That sent me down a trajectory that has led me to where I am today.</p><p>Sexual health educators who challenge me to be better every day. Special shout-out to Steph from the SLAM conference. That was what opened my world up to the sex ed space.</p><blockquote class="et-pullquote left"><p>Our community is very strong, and we pour into the young people who we work with.</p></blockquote><p>Medical community/the adolescent medicine community: Our community is very strong, and we pour into the young people who we work with—my mentors and colleagues who show up for youth in clinical spaces when other people do not.</p><p>Business community: For teaching me how to translate my passion into tangible goals and into capital, which is important for continuing this work.</p><p>My coworkers: For caring for and supporting me on a daily basis, when I’m tired, haven&#8217;t eaten, when I’m struggling, or sick.</p><p>My friends who really are my family and have been there from day one to watch my business and organization bloom and grown and who supported me every step of the way.</p><p>My family for pushing me and always having my back. I FaceTimed my dad this morning before this, and he approved of my outfit. He wanted me to tell you all, “Big up.”</p><blockquote class="et-pullquote left"><p>Most importantly, I want to thank the young people for continuing to inspire me and for fueling this work.</p></blockquote><p>Most importantly, I want to thank the young people for continuing to inspire me and for fueling this work.</p><p>This to me is one of the most prestigious awards I could have ever received. It reflects my commitment to the youth, my commitment to the streets—the people on the ground.</p><p>We are in hard times.</p><p>That means young people need us to show up for them even more than before.</p><p>I remember little Tasha, aka Gorjus, who loved to draw, what I needed growing up, and the community that lifted me up.</p><p>Remember the power you hold—you could be that person for the young people you work with.</p><p>And we must also remember to show up for ourselves and each other.</p><p>We talked a lot about solidarity during this conference. We cannot do this work alone. We must call on our ancestors, align and unite across sectors, race, class, and location.</p><p>I am eternally grateful for this award and can honestly say I feel like I have so much support, love, and beauty around me.</p>								</div>
