Whenever I open Instagram, it feels like my entire feed is filled with content about the importance of community…from mutual aid requests to “everybody wants a village, so be a villager.”

When systems fail us, how can we support each other to thrive?

As I’ve been reading and hearing more about folks turning to one another for support, care, and resources, I’ve been thinking about how this drive for connection impacts sex ed. When systems fail us, how can we support each other to thrive? When schools, clinics, and other systems are not showing up for young people, especially for queer, trans, Black, Indigenous, and people of color, what can we do to try to fill in those gaps?

Enter community-based sex education.

By ensuring caregivers, local leaders, and youth-supporting folks have access to medically accurate and understandable information, we’re meeting young people where they are. Bringing young people and their caregivers to learn together, having community conversations, and making your resources accessible is CRUCIAL always, but especially now. When schools, federally funded programs, and beyond are being told they cannot say “gender” or “sexuality” or even share medically accurate information, we need to turn to folks outside of the normal systems we may typically rely on.

Here are some examples of youth-supporting professionals across the nation who are showing up for their communities.

Your Empowered Sexuality is a Philadelphia-based organization providing education not only to young people in schools, but also to teachers, caregivers, and healthcare providers. Beyond the “typical” sex education topics, they also do workshops on nutrition, body liberation, and anti-fatness.

Talk More is doing incredible work to support caregivers in having shame-free conversations with their young people in the Atlanta area and beyond! They’re holding workshops in the community, but they also have AMAZING free resources on their website, like Parent Planners, categorized by age to prepare caregivers for age-appropriate conversations with their youth. Their Values Expressions Exercise and Conversation Generator provide guidance for a conversation that so many parents are afraid of!

Healthy Native Youth holds virtual Community of Practice calls for folks supporting Native young people. By bringing folks together to focus on specific topics, they’re offering space for caring adults to problem-solve, commiserate, share wins, and find resources. They also have a text message service that gives caring adults tips on talking with young people about mental health!

Other educators, like SexEdU, SxEdFiles, SexEdForGuys, and more are turning to social media to reach their communities! Young people (and really, anyone) may find themselves using TikTok as a search engine for health information, and it’s folks like these who are ensuring that there is medically accurate, understandable, and relatable information there for them.

While restrictions on federal funding and public education are rampant, community-based sex education can offer a different perspective that public education may not be able to. In an individualist society rooted in white supremacy, for some of us, the more organic, grassroots community approaches can feel like intimidating.

And yet, at the same time, since humans have been around, people have been building communities and relationships to stay connected, to be protected, and to resist systems of oppression. From neighborhoods to group chats to villages and beyond, a sense of belonging has provided people with purpose. Turning to our neighbors instead of relying on systems designed to oppress us helps us support young people and, in turn, makes us all better.

Sex ed is powerful work, and you deserve to feel safe doing it—that is the premise of our three new Thrivology resources: Supporting Sex Educator Safety, Managing Your Personal Information Online, and Protecting Yourself from Hacking.

Many sex educators are currently navigating uncertainty around the evolving safety risks they face and how they can protect themselves.

Many sex educators are currently navigating uncertainty around the evolving safety risks they face and how they can protect themselves. We sought out to create resources that would target sex educators’ real gaps and support needs, while also honoring the ways they and their managers are already working to protect their safety. And we knew the only way to achieve that goal was to center the voices of sex educators, managers, researchers, and other subject matter experts.

Interested in using the resources but want to learn more about how they were made? Curious about human-centered design as a way to partner with local youth-supporting professionals and design tools of your own? Read on for a brief breakdown of our design process as a case study of one way that collaborative design can happen.

Deciding to focus on sex educator safety

Thrivology resources address a wide range of topics within adolescent sexual and reproductive health (check out some others here!). Our first step is always to take an informed approach to choosing the topic to focus on.

We decided to focus on sex educator safety by brainstorming with project staff, then widening the circle to include input from our Research Alliance members and expert trainers at Healthy Teen Network, who work closely with sex educators.

A clear theme that our discussions surfaced is that these are uncertain times in the field of adolescent sexual and reproductive health.

A clear theme that our discussions surfaced is that these are uncertain times in the field of adolescent sexual and reproductive health. A lot of sex educators are concerned about their safety and are unclear about what specific risks they face.

Some of our project team had specifically heard calls from the field for digital safety support: Sex educators can see that heated debates about sex ed are gaining increased attention online, but they don’t feel that they have the tech expertise and guidance to protect themselves. We also did background research that found that resources for supporting sex educators’ safety is basically nonexistent.

From these conversations, we saw a clear opportunity to support sex educators’ well-being and enable them to better show up for young people.

Understanding sex educators’ and managers’ needs

For our field research, we took a two-pronged approach of a survey and interviews.

Digital safety survey

Because we had already heard a direct need for digital safety tools, we decided to create a targeted survey aimed at filling gaps in information about sex educators’ experiences and concerns, rather than opening up new areas to explore. Thirty-five eligible respondents took the survey, including 15 educators and 7 managers. Over half of them were very or somewhat concerned about their digital safety, which aligned with our understanding. Others shared confusion about whether they should be worried.

“I do think there’s some reason to be concerned, but I haven’t put much thought into my concern personally. I do know other educators in my field and area who have been doxed, but I do not sense imminent threat of that. I should possibly be more concerned than I am.” -Digital safety survey participant

While many respondents expressed concerns about not being tech-savvy enough to protect themselves, almost everyone was able to name at least one way they were keeping themselves safe! The two main strategic areas were doxing and hacking protection. The survey also validated our belief that sex educators need more support for their digital safety. Over half had not tried to use any resources to improve their digital safety, and only 7% felt that existing resources were working well to keep them protected.

Safety interviews

In addition to digital safety, we knew we wanted to create a suite of safety-focused resources. We therefore took a more expansive field research approach to learn about what supports sex educators need for their overall safety.

We led six 60-minute interviews with five youth-supporting professionals and one policy expert, from across the country. For one portion of the interview, we created an interactive Miro board structure to encourage participants to get specific about their concerns.

After doing the first round of making sense of our interview data, we decided to focus on managers of sex educators as our main audience. We heard that sex educators are under a range of pressures right now, so feeling like their manager has their back makes a huge difference. An organization’s leadership can play a key role in putting policies and practices into place that can help keep their staff safer. We then led three additional interviews with managers to understand how they’re approaching safety concerns among their staff.

This information-gathering stage was crucial for informing our design process to center sex educators’ needs and existing strategies to keep themselves safe.

Using what we learned to come up with resource ideas

Our next step was to transform what we had heard into questions and goals that would spark our brainstorming of possible resources, and from there, we chose specific resource ideas to try out. For each set of data, we grouped information into broader themes and wrote up findings based on those patterns.

From survey data, we came up with a design objective to increase sex educators’ confidence in understanding and protecting themselves against key digital safety threats. We decided to focus on doxing and hacking protections to build on what sex educators shared that they were already doing to keep themselves safe online.

Using our interview data, we found a pattern of four steps for managing staff safety procedures and supports:

Proactively considering staff safety

Assessing risks and supporting staff in assessing risks

Taking action to update policies and procedures

Adapting after an incident occurs

For our resource aimed at managers, we decided to create a foundational resource focused on step 1—getting manager buy-in and increasing understanding of different types of safety.

Trying out possible solutions

After picking resource ideas, we moved into creating quick prototypes, which are initial resource versions that are built out just enough to spark discussion about key questions. These prototypes allowed us to try things out and get early answers, rather than spending a ton of time or energy on an untested idea. We met with at least one Research Alliance member for each resource to get feedback on formats and content.

Below is a screenshot of three prototypes for our resource aimed at managers of sex educators, alongside notes from a meeting with two Research Alliance members.

Getting iterative feedback throughout development

Finally, we involved our Research Alliance members throughout the process of developing the resources, in addition to doing quality assurance reviews within our project team. All three resources first went through a usefulness review; this review focused on questions like:

Is the purpose of the resource clear?

How well do you believe this resource would meet the needs of youth-supporting professionals?

Is the content relevant and actionable?

After we made revisions, Research Alliance members shared their thoughts in a usability review, covering topics such as whether it’s easy to find the information you’re looking for, whether it’s organized clearly, and whether the language is accessible.

While involving youth-supporting professionals during the earlier stages of the design process was crucial for determining that we were creating the right resources, their involvement near the end helped us make sure that the resources included the right information in a usable format.

Conclusion

A key piece of advice in Supporting Sex Educator Safety: A Starter Guide for Managers is to collaborate with your staff to create solutions grounded in their needs, concerns, and goals. We worked hard to embody this practice ourselves when creating these safety resources. By incorporating perspectives from sex educators, managers, and other subject matter experts, we created three practical resources that address real needs and provide actionable guidance.

But don’t just take our word for it—try them out for yourself!

It was late high school the first time I heard someone refer to asexuality. The only context I had for this term was biology class a few years earlier where we had learned about how some organisms could reproduce asexually by splitting themselves in two, and after considering what it would look like if a person tried to do that, I concluded there must be something I was missing.

Reflecting now on the sex education I received growing up, it was all too apparent that any discussion of asexuality was completely absent.

It took my own searching to discover that asexuality is a sexual orientation where someone experiences little to no sexual attraction. Reflecting now on the sex education I received growing up, it was all too apparent that any discussion of asexuality was completely absent.

It might seem counterintuitive to talk about a lack of sexual attraction when learning about sex, but here are four reasons why it makes complete sense for comprehensive sex ed to include discussions about asexuality.

Some asexual people have sex

Asexuality exists on a spectrum, ranging from being sex repulsed to sex favorable, and, of course, everything in between. And contrary to popular belief, some asexual people do have sex. They might want to build a closer physical connection with their partner. They might want to have a baby. They might experience some sexual attraction. There are tons of valid reasons why an asexual person might choose to have sex—but ultimately, this means you can’t assume someone who is asexual won’t ever have sex.

Discussing these nuances, rather than ignoring them or flattening asexuality to one specific experience, helps build a more robust understanding of sexuality. It creates opportunities to discuss how to navigate relationships where one partner is more interested in sex than another or other ways physical intimacy shows up in relationships.

Sex ed is about so much more than just sex

Sex educators are probably used to reciting this whenever prompted, but sex ed is not just about having sex. It covers healthy relationships, communication techniques, self-esteem, media literacy, and so much more. These transferrable skills benefit young people for the rest of their lives in their relationships, friendships, and jobs, whether or not they end up having sex.

A key part of sex ed is the concept of consent. In learning “yes means yes,” it’s also critical to understand the difference between an enthusiastic “yes!” and someone acquiescing out of pressure or fear. Learning about all the ways we ask for and give consent, even outside of sex, helps build healthier communication in relationships of all kinds.

Everyone deserves to understand their body

Even for people who aren’t interested in having sex, understanding their anatomy and how to access reproductive health care helps them stay well. A young person who isn’t having sex may not need a pap smear yet, for example, but knowing about the process and the importance of preventative screenings sets them up for a healthier future.

A major part of any sex ed curriculum is often birth control, which, yes, is commonly used to prevent pregnancy and STIs. Asexual young people might assume they don’t need birth control, but sex ed can highlight the many reasons people use it beyond pregnancy and STI prevention. Different forms of birth control can help relieve period cramps, alleviate the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) or premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), and even reduce pain associated with endometriosis.

Inclusion means validation and connection

Sex ed creates a safe space for young people to ask questions, get answers, and understand a little bit more about themselves.

While it’s being discussed more online and in pop culture, asexuality is still often misunderstood—if it’s understood at all. Especially for young people who are navigating finding their place in the world, it can be incredibly isolating to think they’re the only person who feels this way. Even just naming asexuality can help students feel a little less alone and may even lead them to finding others who identify the same way. Sex ed creates a safe space for young people to ask questions, get answers, and understand a little bit more about themselves.

And for young people who are still learning about their identities, incorporating asexuality into sex ed can reassure them, in the words of Sex Education‘s Jean Milburn, that, “Sex doesn’t make us whole, and so how could you ever be broken?”

What if learning about sexual health felt more like scrolling through a friend’s social media than reading a tip sheet? Not a reel made by a clinic or campaign team, but by a young person speaking directly to their followers.

That’s the approach we took when collaborating with young creators in Baltimore City over the past three years in partnership with Baltimore City Health Department (BCHD) on the Youth Sexual & Reproductive Justice Initiative (Y-SURGE). The research project sought to boost clinic use for young people who identify as LGBTQ+ and/or those disconnected from school or work, while reducing the stigma around talking about sexual and reproductive health.

While Y-SURGE had many facets, I worked with young creators to make sexual health content that felt real and relatable. Through influencer briefs, shared tips, and learning what worked and what did not, we found what I call our “special sauce:” a good mixture of guidance and flexibility.

As one creator put it: “I love the balance of creative freedom and instruction when it comes to making the posts. I know exactly what I have to do, but I am also encouraged to put my own spin and personality.”

This collaborative, youth-led approach inspired Sexual Health Influencers: A Guide to Collaborating with Young Content Creators, designed to help youth-supporting professionals bring this model to their own communities.

Hear it from an influencer

To hear what this experience was like from the young people themselves, I sat down with our creator Kahlil, a Baltimore City native, who loves finding fun and creative ways to get the word out about sexual health.

What made you interested in becoming a sexual health influencer with us?

To be honest, for me, it was the money only because, originally, I did make posts here and there, especially with TikTok, and they can go viral on TikTok and you can make money…When I found out through this they would give instruction and then I’d get paid to create…I thought, oh, that’s bomb. I would do that. That sounds so fun.

How was your experience collaborating with this project and our team overall?

I felt like I got paid to be myself.

I think it was obviously a very positive environment. I felt like I got paid to be myself. I posted what I wanted, and I still got feedback when I needed it…It was a very good experience overall.

Can you describe a moment that stood out to you as an influencer?

I think what stood out to me the most probably was the first time I actually sent one of my videos over that I edited…I purposely sat down, skipped some schoolwork, and spent a long time editing it…and you told me it was funny. And I was like, ‘I did my job.’

Were there particular posting topics you were excited about?

I think it was when I talked about the clinics, only because I decided to go to one of the clinics myself…I had never been before. It was pretty much everything I said it to be.

What would you say to an adult thinking about implementing this type of program?

It’s a good development tool, honestly. My confidence…originally, I never showed my face. But because the topics were important, it made me want to show my face. It’s a good confidence boost.

Any tips for adults to help young people gain confidence on camera?

Don’t sugarcoat things. Miscommunication around topics can be an issue. Just lay it all out.

Don’t sugarcoat things. Miscommunication around topics can be an issue. Just lay it all out. We’re growing up, so eventually we’re going to have to learn about it anyway. Most topics, like the clinics you can go to on your own, just be clear and honest. You also have to find if the person fits the role. If not, you can’t be an influencer and be twisting your tongue.

What would you say to other young people considering becoming sexual health influencers?

Go and do this. It’s fine. You get paid. It’s something you can put on your resume. It just looks good.

What advice would you give to new young influencers just starting out?

Tell the truth. Talk about how to prevent it, how to take care of it [ your sexual health]…Don’t hide from the audience…and post what you want. If you blow up, it becomes a job, so have fun while you can. Also, don’t be afraid of negative feedback. Any feedback is good feedback. Some people will disagree, but others will agree. You build a community with people that are like you.

Hearing from the influencers shows the impact this work has for both the creators and the young people who see their content. The creators gain confidence and leadership, discovering that their voice matters, while their posts share important sexual health messages and encourage peers to visit clinics.
We know 2025 has been a challenging year. From economic hardships to ever-shifting policies to the fear of families being separated, each of us has felt the impact of the difficult times we’re living in. The sphere of adolescent sexual and reproductive health is no exception, with sex educators across the country seeing their important and impactful work being politicized, scrutinized, and even banned.

Despite the challenges of this year, we’ve seen how community and care have persisted.

Despite the challenges of this year, we’ve seen how community and care have persisted. Neighbors activated, cooking meals and donating goods to feed each other. Educators have remained resolute in their values, ensuring that young people have access to the resources and care they deserve. As our #HealthyTeen25 conference theme, In Solidarity, stated so succinctly, “We shine our brightest—together,” and while this has been a tough year for many, we have seen just how brightly we can shine when we come together.

In recognition of the people and things that have reminded us why we persevere, we asked Healthy Teen Network staff what they are most grateful for this year.

Finding strength in community

In the spirit of solidarity, many members of our team were grateful for the family members and friends on whom they could lean this year.

Everyone who refuses to accept ‘I’m ok, I don’t need anything’ as an answer and continue to show up for me anyway.

When asked what kept her going, Jerrica said, “My village: family, friends and all of you beautiful people.
Treasuring the small moments

Gratitude is all about recognizing the power of a small moment, and our team reflected on a few of those beautiful little glimmers.

This year has proved that endings can be new beginnings, and that sometimes, starting over isn’t just possible—it’s necessary.

“Simple moments, like walks around my neighborhood, spontaneous day trips to Rosarito, and watching the cats roam my apartment courtyard, have grounded me in the care and connection all around me,” said Arianna. “This year has proved that endings can be new beginnings, and that sometimes, starting over isn’t just possible—it’s necessary.”

Deb took stock of the things big and small that have helped her this year, including: “Supportive colleagues, loving family—including our pups, Maz and Ledi—sunshine, Lexapro, Wellbutrin, buttered popcorn, and red wine.”

Charlie Blue found gratitude in nature this year, sharing, “I’ve been grateful for moments when I get to connect with the abundance of our still very much alive and beautiful earth, like seeing and tasting fields and fields of mountain huckleberries, or watching the salmon running in a park that they didn’t come to for a long time before restoration efforts…Especially so when I can do that with loved ones.”

And Nick thought about the small acts of kindness that helped him this year. “I’m always struck by the generosity that rises from the most unexpected places—from the hotel staff who meet us with joy and warmth at each conference, to the pro bono counsel who offer empathy and direction, to the strangers who stand up for us in the internet’s most unhinged comment sections. It’s a quiet reminder that our circle is bigger—and kinder—than we think. And I’m grateful for every bit of it.”

Looking forward

All of us here at Healthy Teen Network would also like to share that we’re thankful for you—our members, partners, and colleagues—who have engaged with us throughout 2025 and beyond. Reflecting on our collective power and seeing how, despite obstacles at nearly every step of the way, our field has championed innovation, inclusivity, and access for young people leaves us feeling hopeful and energized to enter 2026 alongside you.

As we reflect back on another unforgettable Healthy Teen Network conference, our hearts are full—and our sense of solidarity has never been stronger.

The outside world feels so chaotic right now, a feeling of constant fires that require our attention; it is exhausting to sift through. And that is on purpose! It is meant to exhaust us, to make us numb, and to distract us from the actual, real, and very important work we all aim to do each and every day.

It might feel lonely right now as we continue our work under these upside down and challenging conditions, but you are not alone.

We are in a really hard part of the journey. But I take strength in the fact that we aren’t alone in believing all young people, all people, have the right to be who they are, love who they love, have access to support and services, and the right to bodily autonomy to help them flourish and thrive. It might feel lonely right now as we continue our work under these upside down and challenging conditions, but you are not alone.

Over the course of the three days, the theme of In Solidarity invited us to reflect on what it truly means to stand together—across movements, across communities, and especially within our own field of adolescent sexual and reproductive health.

Monday: Defining Solidarity

Our first day grounded us in the “why” of solidarity. Through the powerful words of Adaku Utah from the Building Movement Project, we were reminded that:

“In solidarity, we seek joy and justice, especially when the weight of the world seems too heavy to bear alone.”

“Solidarity does not begin with us. And it will not end with us.”

Adaku called us to honor our inner wisdom and to recognize that this work—our work—is generational.

That evening, the Sweet Tea Social brought the perfect balance of reflection and joy. Between live music from The Groovy Groove Band, artmaking, and the photo booth, attendees celebrated community and connection in true Healthy Teen Network fashion.

Wednesday: Coming Together in the Work Ahead

Our closing day called us back to the heart of our mission: solidarity in action. Jaclyn Friedman, Founder and Executive Director of EducateUS, helped us examine the real threats facing our field—from censorship to erasure—and offered tangible strategies to combat these attacks together. She shared one of her favorite quotes from an anonymous source that captures how we need to move forward:

“Change moves at the speed of relationships. Relationships move at the speed of trust.”

Thank You

We’re deeply grateful to everyone who made this year’s conference possible—from our speakers and facilitators to our exhibitors, including our generous sponsor ViiV Healthcare, for their support and partnership.

And most of all, thank you to you—our attendees, advocates, educators, and young leaders—who continue to show up in solidarity, year after year.

We can’t wait to gather again next year in San Diego, October 5–7, 2026, for #HealthyTeen26.
From day one, when Healthy Teen Network was founded in 1979 as the National Organization for Adolescent Pregnancy and Parenting (NOAPP), we have not only affirmed but often been one of the few national organizations working to ensure young families’ access to the supports and services they need to thrive. We do this because being inclusive of and affirming young people who are pregnant or parenting ensures equity for all youth.

With the Healthy Teen Network Young Parent Achievement Award, we recognize someone who has met the challenges of early parenting, has achieved extraordinary personal and/or professional success, and demonstrates phenomenal leadership.

The Healthy Teen Network Young Parent Achievement Award not only recognizes young parents—it celebrates them and their accomplishments, for themselves and their families.

Last month, at the Healthy Teen Network annual conference in Atlanta, we presented Kate Westaby, PhD, with the 2025 Young Parent Achievement Award.
My 21-year-old son is a baseball player and gets to choose walk-up songs. I was so excited that I got to choose one too, though I decided to pass on his suggestions. They were a bit more explicit than I was aiming for with this crowd. Instead, I chose a song about dancing through the lightning strikes, which felt fitting, because that’s exactly what so many young parents do.

And my 21-year-old son is the reason I became a young parent and am standing in front of you today.

I still vividly remember that life-changing moment when I was 16 and found out I was pregnant. I was in a small-town clinic in central Wisconsin—a town with no stoplights. I’d gone in because I was feeling sick, not knowing it was morning sickness. Then the nurse came in and said, “You’re pregnant.”

I remember the blood rushing to my face, my heart pounding, and thinking: “My life is over.”

I’ve interrogated that phrase in my research with other young parents—people who have a child before age 25. Why do so many of us often think “my life is over” when we find out we’re pregnant or going to have a child? What makes us believe pregnancy at a young age is untethered from our dreams and goals? Why is this the understanding so many of us carry?

Young parents are not an exception. We are everywhere, even if systems and narratives act like we’re invisible.

It’s important to pause here and recognize, this is not a rare story. More than one in five birthing persons will become a parent by age 25. Many of us are sitting in classrooms, working jobs, trying to finish school, and raising children at the same time. Young parents are not an exception. We are everywhere, even if systems and narratives act like we’re invisible.

And I wouldn’t be standing here, receiving this achievement award, if my life had truly been over. And I want to pause here to thank Healthy Teen Network for even creating this award because it highlights exactly what I’m talking about: Our goals are possible, even if the odds are often stacked against us.

It’s my hypothesis that this collective understanding—“my life is over”—is rooted in stigma. It’s internalized by young parents, has been a narrative in the pro-abortion movement, and is reinforced by systemic disinvestment.

I know this stigma deeply. In high school, other students put up posters sharing that less than 2% of teen parents get a college degree by age 30. I was so worried this was predictive and deterministic for my future. And I’m standing here telling you it’s not pregnancy that is limiting; it was the way society treated me because of it. That shame is not inevitable. It is constructed. And it is something we can dismantle.

In my research, I uncovered that many young parents were told some version of, “Well, you chose to have this child, so figure it out.” This illustrates the punishment young parents experience.

So I ask: How do we move toward a more balanced reproductive justice landscape for young people who become pregnant— where it’s not only “you have the right to not have a child,” but also “you have the right to have a child?” Where that right is not punished or leads to disinvestment.

We need systems that invest in us, not abandon us.

This balance is essential for young parents to feel supported—to feel that our dreams remain possible. Because while research shows young parenting can increase motivation, it often decreases expectations of actually achieving our dreams. We need systems that invest in us, not abandon us.

One way I’ve started this investment is by founding the Young Parent Collective (YPC).

YPC was born when young moms who helped interpret my research said, “We need to do something about this.” We need to address why 42% fewer young parents are enrolled in college a few years after high school. We need to address why almost half of young parents experience dropping out of high school. It’s not because young parents don’t want these achievements.

In just its first couple of years, YPC has provided paid skill-building opportunities to more than 20 young parents across the U.S.—in research, advocacy, and leadership. The vast majority of our funding supports young parents in these positions. We launched the YPC Research and Evaluation Lab just this year, where young parents earn certificates and are now evaluating our local WIC program. We also conduct trainings about the history of young parenting narratives. Shameless plug for our roundtable on Wednesday.

Perhaps most importantly, YPC creates shared spaces where we process the shame and judgment from stigma. YPC creates space for healing.

Please sign up for our newsletter, donate on our website, follow us on Instagram and Facebook, and collaborate with us.

Because here’s the truth:

Pregnancy at a young age does not cause educational dropout.

Pregnancy at a young age does not cause isolation.

Pregnancy at a young age does not cause poverty.

Things that do cause educational dropout, poverty, and isolation:

A society and policies that punish young parents.

And systems that disinvest in young parents.

Thank you again for this incredible honor. I deeply appreciate getting to know the Healthy Teen Network team and feel so fortunate to learn from your profound insights and to collaborate toward a shared vision of reproductive justice. I also want to thank the young mothers who inspire me every day and continue to build YPC and expand our impact—including Kiria, here in the audience, who is co-presenting with me this week. And to my family, especially my partner, whose support made it possible to launch this organization. And my boys, whose love has taught me the true power and purpose of parenting—thank you.

This award is not just a recognition of my work, but of what’s possible when young parents are seen, supported, and invested in.

The name “Gorjus” was a nickname I gave myself in middle school. Remember gel pens? Yeah, I would doodle it all over my notebooks. It reflects my commitment to the youth, my commitment to the streets—the people on the ground.

We are in hard times.

That means young people need us to show up for them even more than before.

I remember little Tasha, aka Gorjus, who loved to draw, what I needed growing up, and the community that lifted me up.

Remember the power you hold—you could be that person for the young people you work with.

And we must also remember to show up for ourselves and each other.

We talked a lot about solidarity during this conference. We cannot do this work alone. We must call on our ancestors, align and unite across sectors, race, class, and location.

I am eternally grateful for this award and can honestly say I feel like I have so much support, love, and beauty around me.

Thank you for this tremendous honor, which I accept on behalf of my incredible team, Lajeanna Haughton, Visesha Ainapudi, and Sona Jani.

The Mount Sinai Department of Health Education provides youth programming that examines public health issues through a social justice lens. We teach original lessons on a variety of topics relevant to the lives of young people, from consent to mental health to gun violence and maternal health. In our teaching, we emphasize the importance of community-based advocacy and activism in improving community health by highlighting past and present movements that have reshaped how we understand public health problems and their attendant solutions.

We derive such strength and inspiration from the work we do, the youth we serve, and from the efforts of people like those who are in this room today.

This recognition comes at such a meaningful time for our team. I know that we are not alone in our anxieties about the current political climate, the state of public health, and the well-being of young people. We derive such strength and inspiration from the work we do, the youth we serve, and from the efforts of people like those who are in this room today. We are humbled and honored to be in community with you here at this conference.

Today, my team is being recognized as “changemakers,” so I want to speak a bit about our small piece of the work—our vision for transforming how things are done in traditional public health spaces.

Our goal is to advance a paradigm shift in public health settings where many young people do not always feel welcomed, valued, or represented; in places that have historically emphasized achievement as an indicator of worth, where degrees, titles, and credentials are often the sole signifiers of authority and expertise. Our goal is to dismantle hierarchy and gatekeeping and affirm that every young person has the right to learn about, participate in, and exert autonomy over the forces and conditions which impact their health and the health of their communities.

We do this by inviting all interested youth to apply to our programming, without any educational or extracurricular requirements. We ask only that they possess an interest in social justice and a commitment to showing up each day. We do this by promoting dialogue over lecture, making connections between past and present, and exploring how large-scale systems, structures, and policies impact our everyday experiences of the world.

We also do this by playing games, spending time on art projects, and fostering psychological safety and a sense of belonging. We do this by tending to the relationships developed in our space, and by centering affirmation as one of the most important features of our programming. We believe the simple fact that our young people have shown up in a space of communal learning and expressed their thoughts and feelings is something to be celebrated.

We do this by defining the concept of a “meaningful summer” as one in which our young people feel seen, cared for, and valued.

Because their feelings about their time with us are more important to us than any quantitative metric. It means more to us when one of our young people tells us that the affirming and inclusive sexual health education we provided made her feel she could have open conversations with her siblings about a topic that is considered taboo in her family. It means more to us when we have young people begin the program saying they’re generally “interested in maternal health” and end the program by saying they want to be “an OB-GYN nurse midwife working in a community setting alongside doulas and birth justice workers addressing the racial disparities in maternal and infant health.” It means everything to us when a former participant writes to us years later, saying they still think about their time with us as a transformative experience of activating their social consciousness.

I know the work we are all doing is one that stands in opposition to fear and intimidation and oppression, and centers vision and hope as an antidote to cynicism and nihilism.

I know the change we are trying to bring about is a change that, to a certain degree and in various ways, everyone in this room fights for each day—that all young people should feel capable of and supported in realizing their potential, and that that potential should know no bounds in its ability to impact the world around them. I know the work we are all doing is one that stands in opposition to fear and intimidation and oppression, and centers vision and hope as an antidote to cynicism and nihilism. Quite frankly, everyone doing this work deserves recognition for continuing to push forward in a society that so often cruelly pushes back. My team and I celebrate, honor, and thank everyone here at this conference for your vision, commitment, and courage. May we all continue to draw strength from one another and from the young people we serve, tapping into the abundance of wisdom and joy our youth offer as fuel for our continued commitments to advancing change. Thank you for this honor and this recognition.
