This year, Healthy Teen Network’s conference theme is Made to Belong, highlighting the importance of connecting, finding community, and coming together. This April, I had the opportunity to put this theme into practice by leading an activity during our annual staff gathering that embodied that feeling. Part of the activity involved making a song together, so armed with maracas, tambourines, and egg shakers, I encouraged my coworkers to make a beat. The goal wasn’t to create the most beautiful sound in the world; it was to come together and make something unique and have fun!

We worked together as a team, made fun memories, and created something special. That’s the power of music.

As I looked around the room and saw my coworkers shaking their instruments, laughing with one another and trying their hardest to stay on beat, I could feel something shift. Did we make the next trending song of 2026? Not even close! But we made something that was ours. We worked together as a team, made fun memories, and created something special. That’s the power of music.

Music has always been a big part of my life. I first joined band and began playing various instruments in elementary school. In 4th grade, my cello was bigger than I was, and I was dedicated to lugging it around school like a champ. I have fond memories of sharing my earbuds with friends on the bus ride home from middle school. In high school, I took to the stage and sang my heart out alongside friends as we performed musicals like Into the Woods and The Wizard of Oz.

Music as connection

Even now, as an adult, music continues to play an important role in my life. It helps me connect with others and build meaningful bonds, which is especially valuable when the world around me can feel scary and uncertain.

Unsurprisingly, there is a scientific reason why music makes us feel good and draws us to one another. Researchers believe it is directly related to rhythm. Moving to a beat helps synchronize our brains and bodies. When we do that in a group, it can strengthen our sense of community, release dopamine and endorphins (the neurotransmitters responsible for pleasure and mood boosts), and create social cohesion.

One study by Idil Kokal asked two-year-olds to synchronize their dancing to a drumbeat, and the results were insightful and adorable. To keep it simple, when one child started to lose focus or drift off beat, the other would jump in to help. These children began as strangers, but dancing together transformed them into the cutest dance team you’ve ever seen. If that’s not a great example of the power of community within music, I don’t know what is!

Music as community

One of my favorite parts about music is how deeply it is woven into so many cultures. As a Black American, I find that music runs deep in my culture and has connected my people for generations. A perfect example are my family’s summer cookouts. During the summer, friends and family gather around and enjoy food, games, and of course, music! The songs that incorporate line dances are my favorite, because as soon as the first notes of a song begin to play, everyone rushes to the dance floor. It’s a magical moment. You can feel the energy in the air as everyone dances in sync. People are laughing, jumping around, and even if you get a move wrong, there’s no shame, just laughter (and maybe some light teasing!). Grandparents, uncles, teenagers, and even toddlers wiggle to the beat, performing dances that have been passed down from generation to generation. After the dance is over, we giggle, hug, and share stories, deepening our connections while music continues to play in the background.

If you are inspired to find community through music, there are so many ways to do it!

If you are inspired to find community through music, there are so many ways to do it! Concerts are an easy way to find people. I can’t count the number of times I’ve made friends while waiting in a long concert line or turned to the stranger next to me to sing along to our favorite song, instantly connected by our shared love of the same artist.

If loud concert venues aren’t your thing, consider checking out community events in your city. Many communities host a variety of music-related gatherings, from drum circles to live jazz performances. Maybe you’re like me and played an instrument in school, but it’s now tucked away in a closet. This could be the perfect time to brush up on your skills, invite some friends over for a jam session, or sit down at a public piano and see who stops to listen or chat. Music is beautiful because it transcends culture, age, and language, so you never know who you will meet and connect with.

If you’re interested in finding belonging in music with us this year, consider attending our conference in San Diego!

Wisdom Nugget #1: You May Need to Set Aside What You Know!

As (former) youth of immigrant families, our team has similar lived experiences to our end users, as we also have had to navigate two cultures that sometimes felt at odds with one another, while having to manage the messiness that is being a young person.

Human-centered design is all about understanding your end users. While sharing identities with your end users can build trust, you can find yourself focusing, well, on you. When it came time to learn about our end users, I found myself coming back to the younger version of me, thinking about what she needed. Though tending to the younger version of yourself is always important work, it’s easy to let that guide your work in ways that don’t speak to the needs of your end users.

Throughout your process, take the time to pause and reflect on your biases and assumptions.

So, when you see yourself reflected in your end users, celebrate the connection, but be intentional about setting aside your own desires to really understand their needs. Throughout your process, take the time to pause and reflect on your biases and assumptions. Be honest with yourself and your team members: how are past versions of yourself showing up? Lean into your coach’s expertise to help you ensure the insights you gain are grounded in what you heard from your end users, not simply ideas that resonate with your lived experience.

Be kind to yourself so you can show up for your end users. The process is fast-paced and dynamic, and if it’s new to you, as it was for me, it can feel overwhelming at first. Being comfortable with ambiguity may not come naturally, but that’s okay. The more you practice stepping back, revisiting earlier phases, and starting again, the more you build new perspectives, take risks, and make decisions without having all the information.

Pivoting, a.k.a. changing direction or even starting over, is not a matter of if, but when.

Pivoting, a.k.a. changing direction or even starting over, is not a matter of if, but when. You’ll rewrite your “How Might We” statement 100+ times, and 2 weeks later, someone will lovingly revise it (again!), urging you to obsess over language tweaks, revisit your assumptions, and brainstorm to the point of exhaustion before reaching a breakthrough. You’ll often move one step forward and two steps back, likely in every phase. Over time, it starts to click.
It’s hard to believe how long it’s been since remote work became our “new normal.” In a world where many of us have traded long commutes and water-cooler chats for Zoom fatigue and Slack pings, it can be easy to forget what made in-person work so valuable and why folks still light up at the chance to be together.

But in-person gatherings aren’t just a box to check or a grant deliverable to meet. They meet deep human needs that screens simply can’t replicate.

But in-person gatherings aren’t just a box to check or a grant deliverable to meet. They meet deep human needs that screens simply can’t replicate. Last month, True You Maryland held an in-person project-wide meeting for partners across the state that left everyone with more than just strategies and plans. We asked attendees, “What do you value about being together in person?” Here’s what they had to say.

“Human connection. Warmer conversations. Being in the same environment.”

Unsurprisingly, the top response was simply being around other people and the power of real human connection. Attendees shared that being in person makes them “feel less alone and more united” and that they value “sharing ideas, learning about each other, and hugs!”

There’s even a certain reunion feel to these meetings: “I value the opportunity to connect with former coworkers and people I haven’t seen in a while… being able to meet the people that I typically see on screen.” Being together allows us to bond and strengthen relationships in a way that virtual calls just don’t capture. One person simply said they value “laughs.” And honestly, same.

“Sense of community”

Remote work takes away those hallway chats and “stop by my desk” side conversations that help build community and foster belonging. When we’re all in the same space, we bring those moments back, whether it’s walking past an old colleague in between sessions or sitting with a new one at lunch. Attendees really loved “the in-between session chit chats and opportunities to get to know each other informally” and the “ease of connection, lack of distraction, and camaraderie.”

There is also something to be said about witnessing and supporting the work of your colleagues in real life, rather than just through a shared virtual presentation. As another attendee noted, “I value others’ input from their communities and the suggestions they bring to the group. The support from the entire group is fantastic!”

“More organic conversation”

Face-to-face settings unlock a different level of conversation, one with more depth and spontaneity.

Face-to-face settings unlock a different level of conversation, one with more depth and spontaneity. Sometimes the best conversations come from those unstructured moments—a random encounter at the coffee station or a follow-up chat after an engaging keynote presentation. As one attendee noted, being together allows “getting more in-depth than we can on a Zoom meeting,” with others adding that the “increased level of engagement and connection” was important to them.

Showing up together also lets everyone get out of their usual environment (whether at home or in an office) and focus on one thing, rather than worrying about the to-do list that’s now longer than a CVS receipt. Conversations become richer and more engaging when we’re sharing space with folks who are all on the same page.

“Sharing experiences”

Sure, we talk about our experiences on video calls all the time. But there’s something about sharing these stories with others face-to-face that adds an extra layer of connectedness among us and to our work. One partner noted that “making connections in person feels to me like it is more solid and productive,” while others added that they enjoy learning new ideas and taking them back to their individual settings. Another partner summed this up perfectly when they shared that they value “seeing everyone in person! Talking about their wins and their strides. Creating space for new ideas and creative solutions to shared challenges.” I love the moments where formal facilitation is no longer needed because the conversation has taken off—successes are being celebrated, problems are being solved, and no one wants to move on to the next part of the agenda because the discussion has gotten that good.

One response captured the energy of the day perfectly: “I love being able to hear and learn what members of the team are implementing and having success with. I enjoy people, and being together always reminds me [of] what amazing people surround me in this room.” Truthfully, when I think about what I value most about in-person gatherings, this is it. Turns out, no remote work software has figured out how to replicate this energy (yet). But when it comes to being in a room with incredible people doing incredible work (and having fun while doing it!), I don’t think I’d be interested in that subscription anyway.

As three Executive Directors of youth-focused organizations, between us, we have experience ranging from direct work with formerly incarcerated young people to federal public health grants management to national norms-change theater programming, and more.

But one of the most important things we did on this project was step outside that expertise—and into discomfort.

Through a series of experiences, including the experience of learning to be human-centered design innovators as part of the In/Tend cohort, we placed ourselves in unfamiliar situations: asking vulnerable questions, navigating unclear systems, sharing planes and trains and rooms with each other, and relying on others for guidance. In short, we tried to feel what it’s like to be a teen navigating and learning to talk about hard things.

Here’s what we learned:

Vulnerability is physical—and immediate.

This wasn’t theoretical discomfort. It showed up in our bodies: racing thoughts, quiet voices, second-guessing, even forgetting what we planned to say. If adults feel this way, it’s easy to understand why teens sometimes freeze or deflect.

Not knowing is harder than we admit.

Even as experts, we caught ourselves thinking, “I hate not knowing things.” Entering a beginner’s mindset—especially in front of others—requires humility and practice. It’s not a default setting.

Power dynamics are always present.

Identity and perceived authority shaped every interaction. Who was asking questions, who was answering, and who was watching all influenced how we interacted with each other and the work, as well as what felt possible to say. Even subtle dynamics shifted our confidence and openness.

First reactions have big impact.

A fleeting facial expression or tone—surprise, discomfort, even a quick “yikes”—can land hard. Those first signals shape whether someone feels open and inviting, or closed and shut down, regardless of what comes next.

The environment can heighten or ease anxiety.

Waiting, being observed, new spaces, and unclear steps all amplified discomfort. In contrast, quieter spaces, side-by-side interaction, shared creation, and moments of humor made engagement easier. The context isn’t a backdrop; it’s an active ingredient.

We all cope with discomfort differently.

Some of us got quieter. Some filled the space with questions. Others tried to take control or used humor to deflect. These responses weren’t random—they were strategies. Teens use the same ones.

Doing something together builds connection—and risk.

Shared activity can create intimacy, but it also raises the stakes. What if you’re bad at it? What if you misunderstand? Trust in the group determines whether that risk feels manageable or overwhelming.

Confidence doesn’t travel across contexts.

Feeling competent in one area didn’t protect us from feeling lost in another—being pretty competent adults didn’t prepare us for That gap—between who you think you are and how you feel in the moment—is something many teens navigate every day.

Choosing to participate doesn’t make it easy.

We opted in—and we still felt awkward, self-conscious, even tempted to leave. That’s a critical reminder: willingness isn’t the same as comfort. Good design and thoughtful support are what make participation meaningful.

Food and fun helped us move beyond the assignments.

As long-time colleagues, we felt ready to tackle the work together. But it was in moments sharing a meal, embarking on an adventure, or playing air hockey that we found ourselves connecting as people, not professionals, and really opening the door to vulnerability. It felt good to be human together.

These experiences made something clear: learning to talk about gender, sex, power, and relationships isn’t just about having the right information. It’s about navigating emotion, identity, environment, and risk all at once, with still-growing skills!

For teens, these moments aren’t exercises—they’re real life.

If we want young people to communicate with confidence and care, we can’t just tell them what to say. We have to create the conditions where they can practice, make mistakes, be vulnerable learners, and still feel seen and supported.

If we want young people to communicate with confidence and care, we can’t just tell them what to say. We have to create the conditions where they can practice, make mistakes, be vulnerable learners, and still feel seen and supported.

That’s the work. It starts with understanding just how hard, and how human, it really is. And reminding ourselves of our own humanity and vulnerability helps us stay close to that experience and have greater empathy for the teens we work with, our teammates, and ourselves in the process.

Interested in learning more about In/Tend and how you can join our teams of dreamers, doers, and changemakers?
I never really thought I was a “creative” person. I’ve always been drawn to the field of science and health. I liked math as a kid because there was a right answer and usually the “right way” to get it. I certainly wouldn’t call myself good at drawing, painting, or even writing. I used to think that creativity only referred to the arts, and that someone would or would not be “creative.” And I most certainly thought someone had to be creative to be an innovator.

But as I stepped into the innovation space as a project coordinator for In/Tend, I came to realize my definition of creativity was very narrow, that there were many ways creativity can show up in the world, and that maybe I was already being innovative.

But as I stepped into the innovation space as a project coordinator for In/Tend, I came to realize my definition of creativity was very narrow, that there were many ways creativity can show up in the world, and that maybe I was already being innovative.

So let me share with you how puzzles gave me a platform to reimagine what creativity and innovation meant, and how we might already be using innovation in our work.

Different approaches to the same problem

I love puzzles. I love the process of trying to figure out a problem and the moment when the solution is in sight. But do you know a really cool thing about puzzles? Everyone approaches them differently. While not every puzzle has multiple ways to solve it, the way each person brings themselves and their lived experience to a problem is unique. One person may approach a jigsaw puzzle by finding the edge pieces, while another person may start by grouping the individual pieces by color. Maybe you saw someone use a method and are trying to replicate it, or you and three friends are working together to complete the puzzle.

Regardless of the approach, the decision on how to approach a puzzle is a creative one. But how does innovation relate to my puzzle analogy? Well, let me ask you this: Have you ever completed a puzzle using one method and had it work the whole time for the entire puzzle, and for every puzzle you have ever done? I’ll take a wild guess and say it’s unlikely. That is where innovation comes in. When something doesn’t work, you probably think about or change your approach. You took what you tried, maybe what other people tried, or phoned a friend. That pivot? That moment you realize your approach isn’t working? That, my friend, is innovation.

Adaptation is creativity

Just as no single puzzle-solver holds the only right method, no single professional holds the only right approach to supporting young people.

Creativity looks different for everyone, and so can innovation. Just as no single puzzle-solver holds the only right method, no single professional holds the only right approach to supporting young people. This is why innovation in adolescent sexual and reproductive health is so important. Young people navigating questions about their bodies, their identities, and their futures deserve programs and support that are as dynamic as they are. The conventional approaches to sexual and reproductive health education have historically left too many young people behind. It takes creativity and innovation in how we teach and how we design programs and services to meet young people where they are and help them build lives that feel like theirs.

Think about how you already adapt in your day-to-day: how you explain the same concept differently to different young people, how you adjust a training when the audience needs more examples, how you follow a young person’s lead in a conversation rather than following a script. That is innovation. Turns out, you are probably already doing it. The magic of innovation happens when we bring our different strengths and approaches to the same table. When we bring our authentic selves, with our unique problem-solving approaches, our lived experiences, and our individual strengths, we build programs for young people that are more human, more accessible, and ultimately more effective. Programs and services for young people should be designed with young people at the center, just like a puzzle built around its image. Every piece is different, every piece has a place, and every piece is essential.

Before our journey with In/Tend, we weren’t really a team in the way people imagine. We were three people, all working within the same organization, but in different states across the country. We worked together often, but our work looked very different. We each had our own lanes, our own projects, and we would come together when needed, but there wasn’t much direct collaboration woven into how we operated day to day.

That began to change when we stepped into In/Tend, where we’ve now participated in two cohorts, giving us the chance to continue building on what we started.

In our first cohort, we had the opportunity to truly collaborate. Not just coordinate but actually be in conversation with one another. We were hearing each other’s ideas, building off of them, and letting our work overlap in ways it hadn’t before. That also meant letting go of some control. We came in with a pretty strong perfectionist mindset. We wanted things to be right, polished, and figured out before moving forward.

But that’s not how human-centered design works.

There were highs and lows. Moments where things felt exciting and aligned, and moments where things felt messy and unclear.

There were highs and lows. Moments where things felt exciting and aligned, and moments where things felt messy and unclear. What we learned, though, was how to stay in it. We started to shift from a perfectionist mindset to a learning mindset. Instead of asking, “Is this right?” we started asking, “What can we learn from this?” The permission this experience allowed us has changed everything in the way we work.

Now, in our second cohort, we’ve found a rhythm.

Our collaboration looks different now. We have a deeper understanding of each other’s strengths, and we trust each other to lead in those areas. There’s less pressure to do everything perfectly and more space to try, reflect, and adjust. We’re also more aware of the assumptions and biases we each bring to the work. Not in a way that shuts us down, but in a way that helps us be more intentional about how we design and who we are designing for.

Through our journey, we’ve built a deep respect for one another.

For one of our analogous experiences—where we seek out similar yet different experiences to gain fresh insights and ideas—with this cohort, we wanted to explore what trust and autonomy actually feel like when they exist together. We decided to go to a tattoo shop and get matching tattoos.

It’s to be aligned in purpose, while still honoring self-expression and decision.

“Gents” has become more than just a word to us. It’s become a tip of the top hat that says: I see you, I respect you, I am not going anywhere. It means we each bring something different, and that difference is celebrated. It means that whatever challenge finds us, we will meet it with grace and elegance. And of course, a little fun!

This is what we want for the parents and youth we serve, too. Not a script. Not perfection. Just enough trust in each other and in a shared foundation to show up honestly, in their own way, on their own terms. To have the conversations that matter. To become, in whatever form it takes for them, their own kind of gents.

Interested in learning more about In/Tend and how you can join our teams of dreamers, doers, and changemakers? Make sure you’re on our email list to get the latest updates and stay inspired.

Too often in life, we think we need to wait until we’ve got a final product—polished, proven, and perfect. Sure, a polished, finished product is great. But there’s value in the story as it unfolds, too. And yet, fearing that our early drafts, unfinished ideas, or low-fi prototypes aren’t ready can hold us back from our own growth as well as limit opportunities for others.

At Healthy Teen Network, we believe the “messy middle”—the prototyping, the pivoting, and the raw learning—is exactly where the most vital connections and growth happen.

At Healthy Teen Network, we believe the “messy middle”—the prototyping, the pivoting, and the raw learning—is exactly where the most vital connections and growth happen. This year, our conference theme is all about belonging, and that includes the unconventional, the in-process, and the innovative.

If you’re in this “messy middle,” you don’t have to wait to reach the finish line to share what you’ve learned, make valuable connections, spark new ideas, and gain essential feedback to help you continue your journey. Particularly for the dreamers, doers, and changemakers out there pushing the boundaries of imagination in adolescent health, our national conference is an ideal space for you to continue your innovation journey!

We invite you to consider five ways your work in progress belongs in the #HealthyTeen26 space:

1. Exhibit: Gather Insights & Make Connections

Innovation shouldn’t happen in a vacuum. When you exhibit at our conference, you invite the wider adolescent sexual and reproductive health community into your development process. Your exhibit becomes a space where:

Your solution belongs: Let practitioners and peers get hands-on with what you’ve built so far.

Voices are heard: Gather real-time feedback from the people who work with young people every day. Their insights can ensure your solution is made for the real world and will make a difference.

Partnerships begin: Connect with the organizations and individuals who see the potential in your vision and want to help you bring it to life.

2. Present a Workshop: Share and Humanize the Process

Our attendees—your peers in adolescent health—don’t just want to see a finished product; they want to see themselves in your journey and imagine how they could do the same. Presenting a workshop allows you to show that even the challenges belong in our collective story.

Normalize the hurdles: Share how you met your latest challenge. When we talk about our struggles, we make it safe for others to do the same.

Honor the pivot: Discuss what you learned that changed your direction.

Build the narrative: Sharing your story “as you go” humanizes the innovation process, showing that the path to progress is one we walk together, with stops and starts, detours and backtracking.

3. Facilitate a Roundtable: Explore and Learn Together

If you have a complex question, a roundtable session invites others to join you in exploring and learning together.

Spark conversation: Facilitate deep dives into the nuances of your innovation.

Crowdsource the future: Use the collective brainpower of adolescent sexual and reproductive health experts to solve problems in real time.

Foster peer exchange: Position your team as part of a larger ecosystem of changemakers, where every perspective is valued and essential for creating practical solutions.

4. Raise Your Voice: Advertising and Call to Action

You belong in the conversation, and that means making sure people know you’re there! In addition to exhibiting, we also have several advertising opportunities.

Drive engagement: Use the conference app to promote your work and encourage folks to visit your exhibit or attend your breakout session.

Call to action: Whether you’re looking for pilot sites, research partners, or simply more followers, the conference is the perfect place to make those connections.

5. Fuel Your Growth: Belonging as a Learner

And finally, when you come to #HealthyTeen26, you aren’t just a presenter—you are an active participant in a premier professional development experience.

Expand your expertise: Attend incredible general and breakout sessions that can spark the next “Aha!” moment for your project.

Find inspiration: Surrounding yourself with the latest research and field-tested strategies is the best way to spur further innovation.

Connect and network: Beyond the formal sessions, you’ll make deep connections with attendees who share your passion and can become long-term collaborators.

Embrace “Share as We Go” and Step into the Spotlight

Let go of the stress of waiting for and building up to a “big reveal” and move toward a culture of transparency and shared growth. Innovation is iterative; by sharing your story before it’s “finished,” you aren’t just presenting—you’re contributing to a richer, more collaborative ecosystem of innovation where every stage of development belongs and we all belong.

Don’t wait for “perfect” to join the national conversation. Whether you are gathering feedback, sharing your lessons learned, or exploring new ideas, you’re sure to learn something new, be inspired, and make new connections. Your voice and your journey are essential to creating the future of adolescent health.

Join us for Made to Belong, October 5-7, 2026, in San Diego.

The Call for Proposals is open now through May 7 for you to submit your roundtable or workshop proposal.

Early bird registration opens next month—register early and save! Be sure you’re on our email list to get the latest updates.

Tree plantings, stream cleanups, and park renovations are classic, often-celebrated Earth Day wins. Less recognized, but just as true, is that investments like these are also wins for adolescent health—supporting young people’s movement, mood, connection, and belonging.

What would communities look like if we designed green spaces and civic infrastructure with adolescents in mind?

But not every good-for-the-environment improvement benefits adolescents equally. Some changes shape young people’s daily lives far more than others. This Earth Day, it may be worth asking: What would communities look like if we designed green spaces and civic infrastructure with adolescents in mind?

1. Parks and playgrounds would be higher, wilder, faster, and more challenging.

In the United States, playgrounds are often designed almost entirely for young children. Across the United States, too many parks repeat the same brightly painted, prefabricated, 12-foot jungle gyms. Rubber surfacing and mulch chips smooth away nearly every conceivable risk.

Despite the state of our collective playscape, play does not end at age ten. Older youth, too, need outdoor places to move, explore, test themselves, and take healthy risks.

That could mean taller structures, giant swings, ropes and ziplines, boulders to climb, stepping stones to cross, trails to roam, and wildlife to discover—spaces that feel exciting rather than overly cautious or childish.
2. We’d stop designing girls out of public space.

Many adolescents age out of playgrounds before they age into spaces that welcome them. They may be too old for the swing set, yet too young—or too broke—for restaurants, bars, and other commercial hangouts, especially as shopping and lifestyle centers increasingly restrict groups of young people. The result is a nearly nonexistent landscape of adolescent “third spaces.”

This can be especially pronounced for teen girls. The UK-based campaign Make Space for Girls has helped spotlight how many parks are built around young men, prioritizing courts and competitive sports while overlooking the ways many girls prefer to socialize and recreate. Centralized, multi-use sports courts, benches facing the action, and nowhere to gather in small groups quietly send a message about just who belongs.

What helps? Shaded groves, more grown-up swings, hammocks, semi-private face-to-face seating, and paths wide enough to walk side-by-side. These kinds of features recognize that conversation, comfort, and simply spending time together are valid forms of recreation—and essential ingredients to lifelong health.

Green spaces and civic infrastructure that promote socializing do not only benefit girls, of course. NYC Open Streets highlights how infrastructure once reserved for cars can become a place—even temporarily—to gather, reconnect with neighbors, and spend time together off screens. Some advocates have called for making these spaces permanent by adding street trees, bioswales, and other green and traffic-calming infrastructure—which, if realized, expand the nation’s largest city’s supply of civic commons, fostering connection and belonging for teens and young adults one neighborhood at a time.

3. We’d make room for adventure, autonomy, and the uses young people invent.

As someone from Northern Appalachia, I know very well that not every meaningful youth space arrives with a ribbon-cutting. Some of my most cherished escapes from teenage ennui were unofficial ones: mountainside bike trails, swimming holes and tire swings, and mine-scarred gathering spots for bonfires and bad decisions. On the fringes of privatized, commodified, and liability-obsessed social order, these places offered something many adolescents crave: freedom to roam, take chances, and slip beyond the near-constant gaze of adults.

Cities have often learned this lesson after the fact. In Portland, Oregon, the skate community built ramps beneath the Burnside Bridge without permission, transforming leftover infrastructure into what became the iconic Burnside Skatepark. What began as unsanctioned, illegal use was later embraced by the city, revealing what policymakers and planners earlier had missed: Small, janky, do-it-yourself changes to open spaces prove that the people who use a space are often its best builders.

Other communities have made space more strategically. In Lafayette, Louisiana, a downtown group got the city to install what were presented as benches in a park grappling with perceptions of being unwelcoming and unsafe. In practice, these “benches” were some of the most skateable features you can imagine.

The result was a neglected park reactivated by skaters, young people, and eventually a wide range of residents, giving adolescents an outdoor place to gather, get active, and pursue a pastime too often treated as unwelcome and unsanctioned.

Sometimes the healthiest thing a city can do is leave room for young people to make a place their own.

Sometimes the healthiest thing a city can do is leave room for young people to make a place their own.

Many existing supports (like mentoring programs or transition services) are tied to foster care placement. Our findings suggest that young people receiving services at home may have similar needs but fewer structured opportunities for connection.

Interested in hearing more about our findings and sharing questions and comments with colleagues?
This year’s #BMHW26 theme, Rooted in Justice and Joy, invites us to imagine a future beyond survival. A future where young Black mothers are no longer navigating fragmented systems alone but are supported in ways that allow them to thrive—safely, respectfully, and with space for rest, healing, and joy. It pushes us to consider what becomes possible when justice is not the end goal, but the foundation for joy.

What it means to center young Black mothers in the reproductive justice movement

Centering young Black mothers in reproductive justice means moving beyond awareness into action. It requires honoring their full humanity—their choices, their autonomy, and their right to experience pregnancy, parenting, and care with both safety and joy. Justice, in this sense, is not abstract. It is lived. It shows up in systems that listen, in care that responds, and in spaces that allow young mothers not just to be supported, but to lead, heal, and thrive.

What this looks like in practice

Across the country, youth-supporting organizations are modeling what it looks like when justice is practiced with intention. For me, this work is deeply personal. During my time volunteering with Ybor Youth Clinic, I partnered with healthcare providers to bring my lived experience as a young Black youth-supporting professional into the space.

What stood out most was not just the services offered, but how care was delivered. Young people were met with respect, free from judgment, and with a genuine commitment to listening. It reinforced an important truth: Centering young mothers is not only about what support exists, but also how that support is experienced.

We also see growing investment in teen-focused doula programs that provide one-on-one, continuous support throughout pregnancy and postpartum, helping young mothers feel informed, supported, and heard.

Community-based efforts like the Black Infant Health Program further highlight the importance of connection, peer support, and culturally responsive care. Together, these approaches reflect a shift from justice as policy to joy as practice. They demonstrate how intentional support allows young Black mothers to feel seen, valued, and empowered to move through their journeys with dignity.

At Healthy Teen Network, this vision is not new. Our work has long centered young people and young families, ensuring they have the resources, support, and care they need to thrive. As Black Maternal Health Week reminds us of the work still ahead, it also challenges us to continue moving from justice to joy—by uplifting young Black mothers, honoring their leadership, and investing in the communities they build every day.
